I found a few interesting articles involving bank scandals on a MMORPG named eve that has 300k active players. This game has a free market economy, unlike we have here in the US. No bank regulations at all. The players actually run the banks, and adjust interest levels, etc. Some starships cost billions in its currency that can take many people years to achieve, so loans play a valid role. One of the scandals involved a in-game company named EBank. It wasn't terribly complicated, there were 6 directors each holding a share of the banks currency. Well one of the directors split with the cash to the tune of 200 billion in there currency which he then sold for $6100. Right before the split he made a unsecured loan of 250 billion that was never paid back as well. The bank knew once the public found out about this there would be a run, so they froze all loans and started raising capital anyway they could. The public then found out and they lost 20% more of there currency. BUT this bank survived and is thriving again today. They did not receive any bailouts, they did not print money causing hidden inflationary tax because because they couldn't, but they did not need to!

Researchers are actually studying mass multiplayer online games to see what would happen in real life events, such as an outbreak of a highly infectious disease that WoW suffered. And WoW isn't even a realistic game..

Food for thought, good luck everybody.

Where does the currency come from?
How many depositors did that bank have?
    How many shareholders?
How much of a reserve did the bank have?
What was its loan to reserve ratio?
What was its deposits to reserve ratio?
What other assets did the bank have?
Did it liquidate any of these in the crises?
    If so, how?
Is it even possible to find these things out?

    Can you post some links?

As a player of Eve Online the currency seems to come from agents.

People go to agents and do missions. The agents pay them in the game's currency, ISK. Other people don't do missions, they instead mine, build things, etc. People who do missions then buy things off of them (everything in game, except for a few items are made by players). This is how money seems to be printed in the game for the most part.

Another guy ran a bank in Eve and he took off with ISK that was worth something like $70k. However, it is against the game's rules to sell ISK for real money to other players. This guy spent years building up his credibility all with the intention of one day stealing the money. It's all allowed under the game's rules.

Apparently some universities around the world use Eve to study economics. If a lot of people are building a certain ship its price crashes. If barely anyone is building it the price can go through the roof.

The name of the bank I mentioned was EBank on eve online, I am sure they have a website where you can place inquiries.

Also as far as I can the Cally scandal profited $16k, not 70. If it were to be sold that is.

If you are interested in real money games, check out Entropia Universe. It is a real cash economy and very much simulates the real life economy.
