    With the ongoing brouhaha about the southern border of the United States of America and the people crossing it, we would do well to add a new word to our mental toolkit. The word is aporophobia, a neologism from Adela Cortina. It helps in clarifying certain attitudes to be found in the political palaver surrounding the issue.

    Regards, stay safe 'n well . . . informed.

    That's a good word. Of course, as it relates to the right wing's attitudes towards the southern border, xenophobia covers it pretty nicely. But I'll be sure to incorporate aporophobia into my vocabulary to be used when appropriate.

    BTW, I just added it to my Google dictionary.

    Hi, Golem. Ms. Cortina notes that we have no problem with people of whatever nationality/race/religion crossing our borders if, for instance, they're coming to entertain us or perform some other service. To that extent, xenophobia lacks a certain specificity. Her word designates those who, irrespective of race/religion/nationality, are A. poor and, B. bring with them needs which we should, morally, recognize and attend to.

    I recommend her book on the topic. [Ed.: Ol' Torus is an avid reader.]

    Regards, stay safe 'n well.

    a healthy dose of aporophobia would be good for the "elite" of any country.

    How about we just mimic Mexico's migration laws :)
    A look at Mexico’s Immigration Laws - Who Knew? (redice.tv)

    I particularly like rule número uno!

    * in the country legally;

    * have the means to sustain themselves economically;

    * not destined to be burdens on society;

    * of economic and social benefit to society;

    * of good character and have no criminal records; and

    * contributors to the general well-being of the nation.

    The law also ensures that:

    * immigration authorities have a record of each foreign visitor;

    * foreign visitors do not violate their visa status;

    * foreign visitors are banned from interfering in the country’s internal politics;

    * foreign visitors who enter under false pretenses are imprisoned or deported;

    * foreign visitors violating the terms of their entry are imprisoned or deported;

    * those who aid in illegal immigration will be sent to prison.

    That's not the case for the people coming over the southern border. They perform plenty of services, contribute to social security, pay taxes, the violent crime rate is way under the norm for nationals,... as of last estimate I've seen, they contribute about 1% of the total GDP. They may be poor and with needs when they enter, but they are indispensable to the economy.

    No so much :) Waiting on my girlfriend yesterday and watched over 20k U.S. wire transfer to Mexico via WU! Every Thursday the money center transfers as much as 300k from a town spaller than an average football stadium..

    Another instance of poor real world experience ;)

    Borders are borders, countries have a right and a duty to enforce them. It's got nothing to do with
    xenophobia.
    Aren't you special? :eek:

    Wow! That's wonderful! Can you imagine how much GDP whoever paid all that money to produced? At least ten times that, I'm guessing. Ok ok... I'm probably falling way short. Not to mention the taxes, medicare and social security that immigrants (illegal and otherwise) pay. And how about Western Union's commission. No doubt immigrants are a win win win.. everybody wins, for this country.

    Thanks for making my point.

    Oh... I'm not talking about enforcement. I'm talking about the right wing attitudes.

    What do you object to in enforcing the laws? That's the right wing attitude. You claim diligent research but regurgitate canned propaganda from the left.

    There is a lot of hypocrisy in that statement. You have not said why you want all of these undocumented immigrants. Only that the right does not want them.

    The left has overwhelmed the whole argument with hypocrisy. They have all these claims about how much we benefit from all the illegals, but complain when they are bussed into their cities. It is OK with them that these border states have to put up with it, but not in their neighborhood.

    The right's objection pretty comes down to one single fact. When they come across the border illegally, we have no idea who they are. We don't allow it at the legal border crossings, but somehow, the left believes it is OK at all the rest of our uncontrolled border.

    Like I said
    Clearly the scope of this is beyond your comprehension :(

    Mexico's remittances surged 27% in 2021 to $51.6 billion - Los Angeles Times (latimes.com)
    And that's the money that's tracible! The "Dollars" that are transported via mules is twice that reported by WU, MG and Walmart to Walmart transfers :) Bare in mind, this is just ONE of the days of the week, it goes on Friday thru Sunday with the same intensity :)

    Another instance of poor real world experience ;)

    I admit I do have a bit of a problem understanding why people embrace xenophobia.

    ALL people have a right to do whatever the hell they want with their money. It's THEIR money and they worked hard for it. So they can send it to Mexico or flush it down the toilet... it's none of your business

    It's all our business when it effects our economics and resources! Not to mention the subsidies paid out to encourage unemployment when our own could make "What looks to be" around $1200 a week! Any American not willing to work for that kind of money should not qualify for any subsidies "Welfare" until those jobs are filled with U.S. citizens..

    No it isn't. Not even if it affects your resources. It's something the old Republican party used to defend to death. The new MAGA party only defends Trump.

    So let me inform you. The term is not appropriate at all. It deals with hatred. Nobody hates the illegal aliens. They oppose government allowing it, supporting it and defending it. They oppose the move by the democrats to import future voters. The dislike the economic side affects. They prefer a legal path to citizenship, not what we are seeing at the moment. Brouhaha my butt.

    Then why did you tell us that opposition to illegal immigration is ill will toward poor people?

    What the devil are you talking about? What does that have to do with somebody wiring some of the money they earned to Mexico?

    Geez! Never mind...

    Democrats always love to pretend that there is no difference between those who come into our country legally and following the proper procedures and those who just decide to violate our borders and come into the country illegally.

    They act like if you are opposed to illegal immigration that it makes you just xenophobic and opposing of all immigration.

    Nothing but pure mushroom food
