Well, that is a point, right?

Going by the anti-book standard that seems so prevalent these days, the bible is full of sex acts. Rape. Incest. Bestiality.

Should the "parental oversight" rules not be applied evenly?

Frustrated by the books being removed from school libraries, a Utah parent says there’s one that hasn’t been challenged yet, but that they believe should be, for being “one of the most sex-ridden books around.”

So they’ve submitted a request for their school district in Davis County to now review the Bible for any inappropriate content.

“Incest, onanism, bestiality, prostitution, genital mutilation, fellatio, dildos, rape, and even infanticide,” the parent wrote in their request, listing topics they found concerning in the religious text. “You’ll no doubt find that the Bible, under Utah Code Ann. § 76-10-1227, has ‘no serious values for minors’ because it’s pornographic by our new definition.”

The code cited is the Utah law passed in 2022 to ban any books containing “pornographic or indecent” content from Utah schools, both in libraries and in the classroom. It came after outcry from conservative parents groups, who have been pushing to have titles removed.

 

Every law has effects that are not foreseen by its writers. I would argue that she’s in the right and to be honest a Bible shouldn’t be in a public school library anyway. Isn’t there a separation of church and state thing?

 

Not in Utah. Sort of.

Anecdote. A millions years ago, or 25, I was in Salt Lake City, and I was smoking a cigarette. I was told by a police officer to put it out, as I was on private property. Now it looked to me like a public street. I said as much, and his reply is I was actually on church property. Apparently a lot of public appearing areas are actually church property.

It is an odd place. Beautiful, but odd.

 

The parent has a point.

 

I live in utah. I still always thought there was a separation of church and state.

 

I remember being there and you could not buy a drink at a bar unless a local member sponsored you first.

I think religious books should each be learned about in school but not to indoctrinate the children but rather teach of the major world religions, it’s sad that a bunch of bigots want to erase LGBT representation so much that they are willing to rush through laws that don’t really do much to “protect” children but rather try and push an agenda.

The Bible does contain passages that far exceed anything they were wanting banned and I bet many religious persons will see themselves as the victims in all of this.

Actually at PRIVATE Clubs (Like The Eagles, KC, PLAV, Etc...) that is still the rule (all across the country) at many places...

 

It was like that at every bar and restaurant in SLC. This was before the Olympics, so it might be different now.
