The newest petition on the White House site calls for the establishment of a Civil Guard, to be comprised of all lawful firearms owners, who shall, by owning a firearm, become obligated to undergo some basic instruction in their use and safety and to have assigned duties in times of national or state emergencies, to include invasion, insurrection and natural disasters. Such duties would include, but not be limited to, community policing, securing of basic infrastructure, evacuation of personnel from unsafe areas and assisting in relief efforts.

Just having to get the training will discourage some people from buying a firearm, and it is probably better that such persons not have them in the first place.

Having to muster for training and accountability will also neccessitate that gun owners meet their neighbors on some regular basis. It might actually help relieve some of the alienation from each ther that lies at the root of some of our major social problems.

It would also make it harder for someone who is losing his marbles to avoid detection and intervention. Do I have to explain why that would be a good thing?

I know that this is not an ideal solution for those who want a total ban of specific categories or all weapons, but I am not that concerned about their wishes.

It would, of course, mean that the outlaw militias are screwed, because the majority of citizens would be aware of and ready to suppress them when they try to kick off the first major offensive in the RaHoWa. The outlaws woud also be deprived of major support from useful idiots.

The petition was just posted last night, but will not be visible to the causual visitor until 150 people have signed it at this URL:

Have a look at it, sign it if you think it works,, and let's talk about it further.
