Ya, this happens all the time. Several years ago, 19 of the 20 most popular 'Christian' FB pages were Russian bots just sowing chaos. ...still not a good reason to force an internet ID on everyone.
i just dont see propaganda from our awful govt being any worse than propaganda from the other awful govts of the world. In fact, they may provide some osrt of balance. The truth will of course need to be picked out from the avalanche of lies, but given the best way to fight lies is with truth, I want access to as much information as possible. I don't trust anyone to curate it for me- i'll just be getting the curators bias.
oh, I agree, gov should have to disclose too, but I still see Russia pretending to be Americans on our social media as many many times worse "I want access to as much information as possible." which is fair, if you don't want to know who you are talking too, that is fine.... but I also support knowing the country of origin I am speaking too I would also support sites that go above and beyond and do validate people as an option for those that want it
why does it matter if someone is Russian? Or Chinese. Or Australian. How does that validate or invalidate their message?
do you not understand the difference between someone posting from Russia and pretending to be American and an actual American posting from here in our own country? they can post on US social media sites, why would anyone have an issue with people knowing what country a poster is posting from?
Thats essentially the same question I asked you. Why would it matter what country they're from? Its the same validity of opinion, and the same onus upon YOU/ME to establish claimed facts, either way.
we have a right to know they are not our fellow Americans posting then we can judge the posting based on that knowledge
OK, clearly you think you have 'the right' to know, and far be it from me to tell you what your rights are. I fight for my own rights. As far as I'm concerned, some diaper-clad Russian halfwit mashing the keyborad in Siberia for vodka credits from Putin is no more or less an 'accurate' source of information than our corrupt corporate-owned govt intelligence agencies or their various mercenary-media mouthpeices. I care not whether they are correctly identified for me. I'm going to check into what I'm told regardless. I DO care whether my rights to speak my mind are limited based on the claimed influence of either of them, and the best way to insure I'm not restricted, is to ensure neither of them are restricted either.
are you are fighting for the rights of people in other countries to post here anonymously and pretend to be Americans? all I was asking for is them to be identified by the IP of the country they're posting from, they are still anonymous - just they would not be able to pretend anymore
I am an expat and I live overseas and I really don't GAF if anyone knows that, there are MILLIONS of us. The problem I have with her proposal is that it will ENABLE stalkers and harassers to track their victims too easily. I look at it this way, the internet is PUBLIC space as opposed to PRIVATE. When you are in a public space you can be anonymous by just sitting on a park bench or going for a jog BUT the moment you ENGAGE in a TRANSACTION of any sort you become a CUSTOMER. You and I can browse the internet and read whatever we like and even watch things that are free. It is when we engage in a transaction, like posting on a forum, that we become a USER of that forum. Just as any commercial organization can set up Rules regarding the behavior of their customers so can forums set up rules for their users. Just logging into a browser means CONFORMING to their rules. Those Rules can REQUIRE some form of ID or they can ALLOW anonymity instead. Each website makes the decision that best suits their needs. What she is proposing is an Authoritarian OVERREACH which isn't surprising given her role in the Xtofascist controlled GOP. Congress DOES have the authority to REGULATE corporations however there are websites that promise anonymity because they deal with sensitive topics. Will they be FORCED to expose their VULNERABLE users?
When it comes down to it, there's no anonymity in the digital world. One may not know one's real name or place in real time. But it is all digitally stamped. If people are afraid of what they say, perhaps, they shouldn't be saying it.
The truth can be censored and punished as easily as lies can be. All that is required is to set the precedent that certain information or sources is forbidden.
Darn it, I can't vote in this poll with the choices provided. Too bad there wasn't a choice that said something like, "Yes, keep anonymity, but vote for Nikki if the alternative is Biden and his gang of America-hating 'woke' handlers".
One of the issues is that people are not necessarily doing all their www'ing for themselves. I used to do all sorts of crazy searches just to learn about new things and I have done a ton of them trying to figure out things for other people. I sort of stopped going as deep down rabbit holes when I found a news report that the FBI was tracing and monitoring visitors to certain sites I had been way way down. The Earth Liberation Front was mentioned as one of them and I had been deep diving into them trying to figure out what they were about as it made no sense to me why they were doing the specific crimes they were credited with. I had been reading the Anarchist Cookbook about the same time online and that was another one mentioned.
I'd like to see the details. User verification isn't the same as requiring you to reveal your identity online. You can still maintain your anonymity to the public even if not with Twitter.
What does that have to do with anonymity? Truth can't be punished NOR censored. Where'd you get the idea that information or sources is forbidden?
I believe we should be able to keep our privacy on the internet. Although I believe certain people can find out things about you if they want to, even when you think you are anonymous. Also, I never say exactly what I think on these boards about some subjects. I hear the alphabet organizations have people monitoring these political message boards. Hope I don't sound paranoid.
There's a saying, its somewhat new, and I think there's a degree of truth to it- if the govt doesnt have you on list yet, you're doing it wrong.
No, no NO!!!! If she is really going to push this, I am off the Nikii Haley for president bandwagon. The decision in New York on the Trump case sends a chilling message to those who disagree with those who run the far left government. If you disagree with them, they reserve the right to prosecute you and ruin you financially. It's like the social score system in China, which the progressive Democrats would love to impose on the citizens here. The far left is dead set against the First Amendment. They want to control speech, opinion and news reporting. That fascist judge in New York City would be more than happy to lead the charge.
True... I use my own name online... but I am Canadian... so I am unlikely to disappear off political forum tomorrow due to my being assassinated?!
We have Ruskie who posts here now and then. He writes that Stalin was a humanitarian. You don’t have to know what country he is from to know that opinion is 100% full of crap.
