the legions of the envious see the progressive income tax as a holy jihad against the more prosperous rather than an efficient revenue collection mechanism

Seems to be what fuels their motivation. They think of this as going after the haves they presume to be guilty of tax fraud because quite simply put, they don't have.

No, you don't. Please don't. I've pointed out your strawman fail which is glaringly obvious to most.

Um if you want more tax money then you increase taxes on the people that have more money to tax.

I am all for a flat tax that taxes nobody for any money made under the poverty rate (rich or poor) and then everyone is taxed equally for every dollar earned over that (non-labored income is treated the same as labored income)

so if the poverty rate is 20k, and you earn 41k, you pay tax on 21k

if Republicans are doing it, it won't benefit the middle class, it will benefit the rich, watch and see

The bill would change the structure of taxation, not eliminate it. There would be collection system and accounting system, just not a R\rube Goldberg type. Our tax system is the most complicated in the world, and struggles under the crushing burden of itself. CPA's struggle with it. Hell, the IRS itself is still trying to decide what they are supposed to do a week before the April deadline, and accountants all over the nation sit waiting for them to firm up the rules, which are ever in a state of flux.
All of this is massively expensive and time consuming as well as confusing.

May not have a chance anyway, government loves complexity; you can hide a herd of elephants in it with ease. A hundred herds of elephants.

What is the break even point if we switch? Has anyone heard about how much consumption tax would have to be? Before I go beyondd a "philisophical" discussion I woujld like to see some facts and figures to compare the effects across the board.

A flat tax with no deductions is the only way to go. Under that there would be no need for additional agents because how could anyone cheat other than not reporting income.

I'd have no problem with that. Save money- just on the cost of preparing tax papers and keeping all the documents that you must have now.

Years ago I was visiting a friend who lived in the Bahamas, and he explained how they had no tax returns to file. The islands imports most of it's needs, and all imports have duties when they came in. This is like a consumption tax. The higher standard of living you have, the more you buy, and the more you pay. No revenue service involved with the citizens at all.

While I don't know how the proposed bill handles it, they say it would be a consumption based tax. I also think that a government using tax money they take from people as the bait they use in promising to give it back would not like that idea, so I suspect that if the bill did clear the house, it would be torpedoed in the senate.

We need some serous change, particularly in simplifying government and shrinking it and all the red tape it generates. Some political philosophies hate those ideas.

    Just remember their tactics.

They lose the argument, then they insult you, then you insult them, and then they run to mommy.

According to the numerous congressional investigations and testimonials it is currently non-complicated tax returns so that’s likely the poor and middle class.

    Hm.

    That's interesting, isn't it.

I'm sure going from the $20k threshold to the $600 threshold has nothing to do with that, as they promised.

These investigations were prior to that change but I agree the $600 limit is completely absurd

I just think it's funny that the IRS has always gone after people in the lower income brackets and people still think this time it'll be different.

You wouldn't intentionally seek a change to $600 if you in any way were going to go after millionaires.

It's sad, is what it is, that people are this uneducated on the topic despite it being something they could easily educate themselves on.

I agree, so many people decide to be ****ing idiots and not bother to educate themselves before opening their mouths and proving to all they have no clue what they are speaking of. Thankfully no one on these forums has that problem

The problem with a national sales tax is it has a negative impact on the bottom incomes. As is, the people on the bottom do not pay income taxes, once you apply a national sales tax, every transaction they make will then come with that new tax. Leaving them worse off than they were under the income tax system.
