Alabama executes a man with nitrogen gas, the first time the new method has been used

hanging done properly is an instant death.

I don't support the DP save for cases when someone doing life murders a guard etc. However, we have to separate the current group of those who are "outraged" over this execution into two camps

1) those who do not oppose the DP in general but oppose what appears to be this novel means of execution. Most of this outrage can be traced to group #2 that opposed traditional forms of execution that were quick such as hanging, shooting or lethal injection

2) those who oppose the DP no matter what and will claim any form of execution is cruel and unusual. as a result, drugs that pretty much guarantee a painless death are not available. As a long time pet owner and the husband of a lady who has owned horses since she was in her teens, I have sadly seen several horses and several dogs put down and while not pleasant, I doubt the animals suffered at all. Now if a veterinarian can euthanize a thousand pound horse with one injection, the same can be done to some mass murderer. But the no DP advocates prevent that from happening and are-in a sense-as responsible for this current type of execution.

 

Sounds like suffocation to me, which is the same as very slow hanging.
