No never but I do make fig preserves when someone lets me get to their fig tree.. I don't have much luck with fig trees. I am on my fourth fig tree and trying to baby it into living.
Strawberry figs sounds wonderful. I bet it tastes devine..:-D

Grey squirrels are agents of evil, the minions of the devil, they should be eradicated from the country. :gun:

They are killing our poor red squirrels...

    LOL, good thread, squirrel killer.

I'm a feeder myself but then again, don't have fruit trees or garden to worry about. Spent a small fortune on squirrel-proof bird feeders until I finally gave in and put out a pie tin full of sunflower seeds. I'll have cardinals, blue jays, doves & squirrels all having dinner together! Like people, though... one gets an attitude and everybody scampers/flies away... only to try again later.

Squirrels are nothing if not persistent lil creatures. I'd prob be cocky too if I could walk across a street on a telephone line.

If you don't want squirrels eating your bird food you can buy or make seed with peppers mixed in. Birds will eat it but squirrels avoid it.

I finally found one that's a long glass tube with rounded brass 'roofs' over the feeding holes. Nothing for squirrels to hang onto... but it's still fun to watch 'em try.

Noticed something strange this year, those ugly grackles don't eat bird seed. They'll flock to my birdbath and splash around (esp when it's 107), but never touch the sunflower seeds. Picky pests, I guess. I hate those birds. Wish the squirrel killer would take a few million of them out, too.

:) I knew a guy that had a trout pond , and fed his fish with 10 gallon hanging feeders .. the squirrells would all gather on the 10' concrete walk-way and wait for the timer to despense the trout food.. must have been over 30 squirrells gathered ... all in a row ... quite a sight , and if you like fried squirrell or squirell stew , then it was a smorgishboard .. [IMG]

Just pop the ones you wanted with a .22 , [IMG] and dip them out ... :hungry:

Hey , good luck with the new 'rig' . [IMG]

    I myself prefer a head-shot , , , I never have eaten the brains , so a head shot don't waste any meat . . .

Let me know how the new rig does ... :)

i bet they'd be extra tasty with what they've been eating too...if you're into that sort of thing. personally, i'm not into rodents of any type.

    :) Mikezila , squirells ain't like rodents ... [IMG]

    A squirel is different , a grey squirrel won't touch any type of carrion , , , NO , else I'd not eat them myself . . .

    Now , you take a rat/mouse/rodent , they's eat carrion as a meal of opportunity ... but NOT a squirrell . NOPE ...

Squirrels is strictly nuts & berries & roots & twig tips & flower blooms & buds , and maybe the occasionally unlucky grasshopper ..( & figs & peaches when available :) sounds like a healthy diet to me , how about you ? ? ?

Mike , you take a squirrel that's been fattened on figs & peaches & nuts ,,, like the aforementioned poster has , why man , get the cast iron frying pan out because your fixing to fry-up something better than any fried chicken you ever ate ... :hungry:

I agree. As an old southern missouri boy, I have hunted for and ate squirrel, rabbit and frog legs. All of which make chicken taste bad.

In all fairness, you Scottish folk developed the technique of eating fat out of a animals rectal cavity. I think I'd rather eat squirrel.

:handshake: Thanks , Old Timer for the memories of easing through the woods with a good .22 / 20 ga and collecting a bag of grey's ... gonna be some good eating tonight ...

:) Can you imagine a more perfect squirell Utopia than having a fig & peach tree grove along with a few pecan trees ? ? ?

    That's squirell heaven , that is ... :)

You boys from downstate Missouri will eat anything - squirrel, rabbit, possum, raccoon, muskrat, skunk, turtle... the variety of wildlife served at the annual FFA dinner never failed to amaze me!

Meanwhile, us civilized city folk ate Imo's pizza, the Special from Amighetti's on the Hill, Gus' pretzels, and frozen custard from Ted Drewes - one of the few benefits of living in South St. Louis! :D

South Broadway and Delor - a little north of Bellerive Park.

Arcelia's closed at the beginning of the year, but someone has bought the building, and is supposed to re-open it.

IMHO - The South Side hasn't been the same since Legion BBQ at Broadway and Gasconade closed.
