I genuinely wonder why Columbus Day is a federal holiday. He didn't discover America (there's evidence that a lot of people did before he ever stepped foot in North America--the Polynesians, Vikings, etc.). He thought where he landed was in Asia until he died. He ended up enslaving the natives and killed a lot of them. Not exactly federal holiday material in my humble opinion.
You are correct - and I can't figure out why either! I suggest we take one of the known "others" and celebrate that person on Columbus Day!
I mean...no one person discovered America...the Native Americans did...why give the honor to anybody?..
What makes things worse is that Columbus was the only person in history ever to be confused about where he landed or to enslave or kill anyone. OP is right. No holiday for him.
I don't really know. The corporation I worked for didn't allow any holidays. Only "management" got holidays.
