American flags banned for symbolizing racism--UC Irvine Professors

While the US has certainly had an abundance of racism, xenophobes, and ethnocentrists, I do not believe the American flag has ever been a symbolism for racism. While I respect freedom of speech, I believe the ban is misguided and ungrateful.

The US flag has been used for racist purposes. Think about illegal immigration and the idea that illegal immigrants aren't American citizens. If nothing else racists are malliable. They can easily use the flag for whatever purpose they so desire.

If the american flag is considered racist, what of the confederate flag? Is the confederate flag equally racist, or more racist?

 

What are you talking about? How is illegal immigration racist? It's much more an economic and national defense issue. I don't care if the illegal immigrants are Canadian or Mexican or Haitian. They can come in the legal way, or not at all.

Yes, I should clarify--I don't believe the government, as opposed to individuals, has used the American flag as a symbol of racism. How do I say that? I'll tell you, certainly minorities, and even women, have been discriminated against in the US, no doubt about it. But I believe there were always a substantial amount of people, with the government even, who believed such actions betrayed America's principles. In fact, I'd argue the Old Glory has become a symbol of freedom around the world, hence why the Kurds love, respect, and cherish it

Actually, the left needed that to point out how white an Hispanic is for racist reasons to vilify him but since you asked, I replied. Now, what point are you trying to make?

 

Sure, it can be used as a symbol of freedom. But it can also be used as a symbol of oppression. It can change meaning but it has been used to justify racism. So it could be used the way the professor advocated for.

Lol, well if Mexicans are the ones crossing illegally the most, then they will get impacted the most. That's called mathematics. If there were more swedes trying to get in illegally, they would be impacted more. I don't give a damn about the color of their skin. I care about their actions. Liberals always make everything about race. I am about accountability, no matter your skin color. It's like the whole ferguson and New York thing. "Oh it's white cops shooting black men". No, it is law enforcement officers enforcing the law. Skin color does not matter. If your skin was damned purple and you break the law in such a way that a police officer feels threatened, your purple ass will be shot. Same goes for illegal immigration. Obey the law if you want to be a citizen of this great nation. Breaking the law from day 1 is not a good way to start.
