I am uncomfortable with our nation's history with native americans. For that reason, regardless of their motives in putting up such a monument, I at least like that someone acknowledges the atrociousness of that era of history.

The genocide of indigenous peoples of the Americas was far worse and far more deliberately genocidal - if it possible to imagine worse. Entire races of NAs were literally slaughtered to 100% extinction, including 100% of ALL indigenous peoples of ALL Caribbean islands as just one example.

Among KNOWN attrocities and genocides in world history, none come close numerically to that of the indigenous peoples of the Americas - North, Central and South America. There were genocides against native peoples elsewhere and attrocities and genodical is across all world history all over the world. But the greatest numerically were the indigenous peoples of the Americas - even not counting those who died of Western diseases. However, disease also was used as a weapon on occasion deliberately.

Except the Gulags were largely also death camps. The majority did not live to return.

 

As I understand it, most of the indigenous peoples of the Americas died from diseases that they had no antibodies to defend against. Europeans didn't have any idea what was killing them...it wasn't purposeful. I feel no guilt by association anyway since my first ancestors didn't arrive in America until 1900.

I think that I were a member of an indigenous group, I would be disgusted at Russia trying to exploit my ancestors' suffering to embarrass another country. It's pathetic if it's true. The French, English, Spanish, Portuguese and all the countries in North and South America have unresolved issues with aboriginal peoples. Russia's antics just add to the exploitation.

 

As a Native American with a full blood Cherokee mother I believe we make too much of this. Sure the trail of tears is a dark stain on white American culture of which I am half German on my fathers side. But everyone forgets Indians sold Indians into slavery and Indians killed Indians. Most native Americans have moved past this but some Americans can not. Why is that?
