hmmm... you need to read more.

you could maybe try learning something from real Russians, too - there are a number of them on the forum ...

WRT solzhenitsyn. he was an interesting man ... gulag archipleago refers to a time prior to what we know as the cold war .... and his criticisms of soviet restrictions on political freedom, and "freedom of speech" certainly have validity ... but it seems he wasn't that keen on the west ... he went back as soon as he could, and never returned.

whatever he did value in the west, there were many things he was also critical of.

    there is no perfect society.

The Soviets had less. Far less. Your premise that they were better informed despite have far less information makes no logical sense.

It is certainly possible. But we have (and had) access to all of THAT as well. The Soviets were restricted. We were not.

Rights are irrelevant...we are not discussing rights. We are discussing what information sources they were allowed to access. They were not allowed free access to media. Their media sources were restricted.

Because the old lady down the street "diagnosed" him? LOL

That is incorrect. We appear to have a language barrier. Allow me to educate you:

Please note that all definitions refer to an individual. That is why the singular (person) is used instead of the plural (people).

There is if that person is in control of other people, and they in turn control other people as well.

A lone bank robber can control an entire room of people, even though they dramatically outnumber him. Why? Because he has a dangerous weapon and they dont. Dictators can rule for the same reason.

In those cases it is no longer defined as a dictatorship. It is called something else (in this case, an oligarchy). We have different words to describe those situations. They are not dictatorships unless they are ruled by individuals.

No it doesn't. It just requires their obedience. Fear works well.

Exactly...do you believe you know my opinion better than I do?

You uncorrectly interpret my premise. I do not speak they were better informed. I speak they always had enough information.

Speaking about getting the information besides mass-media, I mean: relatives living abroad, tourist and working trips, the soldiers taking part in military conflicts, foreign radio, etc. My uncle floated in the sea during more than 30 years and has visited all continents including Antarctica. I think he knows the world better than the average American journalist.

Sometimes old ladies can be right. Do not underestimate old lady. [IMG]

Do not call on the Oxford dictionary. You'll be surprised, but in Russian this word sounds absolutely identically and has the same meaning. So there is no language barrier. We do not speak about a person, we speak about a phenomenon. So Lenin spoke about dictatorship of proletariat, accordingly proletariat was dictator. So the dictator is not a person but a whole class.

This is uncorrect example. A lone bank robber can control an entire room of people because there is no other brave guy with a gun in this room. And a lone bank robber will be killed as soon as he will leave the room. While management the state is collective business. Any dictator is forced to have support of elite at least.
There is very interesting example from Russian history. At January 1762 was crowned new Russian emperor Peter III. He is very interesting personage. Being absolute monarch, having absolute authority, he has managed during a half-year to set against himself all Russian elite of that time. So at the summer of 1762 he was already overthrown and killed.

Oligarchy is dictatorship too. But the dictatorship of group of people. These are nuances which change nothing.

You exaggerate the role of the personality. There is no person which alone can intimidate millions. Anyone, even the odious person reflects interests of a group of people. If you will try to become the dictator and will pursue your interests only. You'll not be alive more than a day. This is an axiom. A dictator has many duties. It's very hard and dangerous job to be a dictator.

I do not know your opinion, but I know what is information technologies and creation of public opinion as a part of these technologies.

Ah, then we agree that they were less informed than Americans.

Yes, that is what I mean. We have (and had) access to information besides mass media as well. Mass media was not the only information source we were allowed access to. We had no restrictions.

All things Americans had access to as well.

I am sure that is true. But I am willing to bet there are Americans who have done exactly the same thing.

So if an old lady tells you that you have aids just because you coughed in front of her, will you take her seriously? LOL

There is a very good reason that people defer to actual doctors rather than random old women on the street. Even in Russia.

I already did. And it agrees with me as well. I quoted three different dictionaries, and they all agreed.

The word "dictator" does not actually mean what you think it means.

Well, that would be relevant on a Russian forum. This forum is in English though. So English definitions are what is relevant.

In English, what you are describing is an oligarchy, not a dictatorship. \

That was a figure of speech, not the definition of a word. It would be interesting to see a Russian dictionary define this word (in English).

There is if that person is in control of other people, and they in turn control other people as well.

    (Emphasis mine)

Yeah, that was my point. If the robber has all the power (the weapon) the robber has the control. The only way he can be challenged is if someone else also has power (the weapon).

No, he just needs their obedience. Fear works well with them too.

Then why do we have two different words for them? LOL

Lets see what the dictionary says:

All definitions, from all sources, use the plural.

I'll take your word for it that the words are synonyms in Russian. In English they mean completely different things however.

It isnt just personality. It is the ability of the given dictator to carry out a threat. If he has that ability, he has control. Just as the weapon gives the bank robber control.

LOL! Saddam did that in Iraq for decades.

Then, again, how did you determine that I do not agree with what the "elites" are doing? How did you determine that it runs counter to my real opinion?

You are making the blanket assumption that the "elites" are imposing something on me. How do you know they are not doing what I want them to do anyway?

Man, I gave up arguing with Patap because he is one of those kinda people who likes to be listened and do not want to listen others. At the same time Patap doesn't see any points but believe only in facts. And, of course, the facts must be the Russians only because all other facts are fakes :))))) So, my advise to you dude just move on. Otherwise you will waste your time. I saved my time not speaking with him and to some other pointless Russians on this forum.

    Generally speaking about the topic.

Thx God I can compare. I think Russians will NEVER understand Americans so and Americans will NEVER understand Russians. Once I said it here, in this forum, and now I can just repeat it. The problem is in the understanding of values. For example, even on this forum it is quite noticeable that Russians love the statistics and compares. It's historically, I believe. In the old days the Soviet propaganda was based on the primitive compares of iron, steel, tanks etc to other countries. So, the past three generations of Russian people like to realize that they have big army, big land, big cannon in the most beautiful in whole earth Kremlin etc. All they think about Cold War is just "we were the one who can be against mighty USA". But who actually needs it? Who needs so many tanks if Russians live in the same conditions as pigs on Texas farms? Americans, basically, don't give a f... about neither Russians or Pakistani etc. They don't even know where this countries are geographically situated. Because in America people believe in personal values, such as independence of choice and freedom. This is something that Russians never had and this why people simply don't understand each another when they trying to discuss different things here. Russians see everything as statistic and see no personal values. Americans don't give a f ... about statistic and respect personality. So, any topic will come to the dead end if people from this two cultures will try to discuss something. It's been tested thousand of times.

P.S. - Stalin said - "One death is tragedy. Millions of deaths is statistic.". I'm so sorry to see that Russians are still thinking this way. It's been historically this way and I belive "the time is a great healer".

P.S.S - There is really great Russian idiom - Potyomkinskie derevni. . Unfortunately, there is everything in Russia as this kinda "Potyomkinskie derevni". Even on this forum many Russians try to create false visibility of Russian life that doesn't exist. I don't think that modern Russians are brainwashed with some kinda Putin propaganda. I have another opinion, I think modern Russians just ashamed that they live like 3rd world countries so they decide to build this "Potemkinskie villages" to let other to think that Russia is still big and great. In real this country lies in ruins. And the only enemy it has is alcoholism, drugs, poverty and catastrophic fertility. And no one but Russians ruined their own country to this condition. Russians don't respect each another but they want to be respected from all around the world. It's ridicules and this why we have such elements as Patap on the forum. Modern Russians are extremely aggressive against any opinion of opponent and this is absolutely restricted in America.

I am not so sure that Stalin didn't single-handedly rule the USSR as cult of personality and fear. I don't think he was particularly smart as evidenced in his military orders, but he was clever and cruel to an extent that made Hitler jealous. Even Beria and Kruschev feared him. As for Cold War propaganda both sides deceived the public, the telling factor in the conflict was that Marxism and Communism are bankrupt philosophies and capitalism, though not perfect, is a more realistic economic system.

Russians are cute. Both America and Russia are dying, and the Russians want to fight about the past. It would be risible if not so tragic.
