I'd rather learn something than see some computer generated action.

Maybe. Couldn't tell you anything about Selma. Until this thread. Sniper was advertised on television for quite some time now. Probably has an impact on number of viewers.
But from what I know, the author is the main character, I don't think Selma was written by MLK.

Was either of them reviewed by an historical group for accuracy?

It is not that unusual for different people to highlight different aspects of a person's life.

Both movies had criticisms for historical accuracy, as does every historical movie drama, as I've learned. Both movies are also well-received by the general public. I've seen Selma but not American Sniper, but I heard it was great and gut-wrenching.

no, Selma wasn't received well overall.

it only caters to 11% of the population, and the other 89% will be called racist if they dare to voice not liking it, so most of them will simply stay quiet

I have the Longest Day on VHS tape and watch it every so often. I think it was one of the best films ever made.

Funny. Selma boasts a 99% approval rating on RottenTomatoes, a 7.8/10 on IMDB, and an 89/100 on Metacritic. Sounds like approval to me.

Being white and not knowing what it's like to be discriminated against for my race, I would like to try to understand what it was like to live back then during those times. I am not an apologist.

Oprah didn't direct the movie though, she was a producer. Know who else worked on the film as an executive producer? Brad Pitt.

Looks well received. At least by those who watched it.

Why would it cater to 11% of the population?
What do you mean by 'cater to'?

that's what I mean.... blacks will watch it and say "amen" just as long as they say what they want to hear..... = well recieved by those who watched it.
of course, black apologists who are white will also recieve it well... but past that 11% of the population that is black, and however many white guilt watchers go.....

what's the black population %....around 11% of total population, right.... Well, give or take, that's about what it is..... add to it the #whiteguilt crowd...... it caters to what.... 1/4 of the total population?

cater.... make a movie that tells them exactly what they want to hear...... that MLK was great and we should just ignore he cheated on his wife, and that he plaigairised his doctorate.... and was apparently, what libs today would define as homophobic.....

So just because someone did something bad in one area means that we shouldn't listen to them if they have great ideas in another area? If that were the case, no one would be listened to. Most people were homophobic back then. We didn't know what we know now regarding homosexuality even ten years ago. New knowledge is a great thing.

Kinda what I thought. Only a select color will watch.
I've seen many movies that were predominately about a black. Coach Carter, I thought was a great movie. No, I'm not a white apologist. Not many are. It seems to be a term thrown out by those with little integrity.

At least he didn't cut down a cherry tree.
Meaning things are always shown differently about a person who achieved something good for humankind.
Of course, it might seem you don't think MLK did anything good for humankind, right?
