"What possessed Chinese Party leaders, and then Trump, to so recklessly kill a policy that had not only kept the peace for five decades, but allowed China to undergo just the kind of economic development and national rejuvenation that its people have dreamed of for decades? Xi’s muscular approach may be propitiating certain ultra-nationalists at home, but it was also pulling down the keystone of the global archway that upheld China’s integration into the world and antagonizing so many once collaborative foreign partners. Was this really in China’s future interest? In short, what compelling Chinese national interest was served by undermining engagement?

Without political reform and the promise of China transitioning to become more soluble in the existing world order, engagement no longer has a logic for the U.S. Beijing’s inability to reform, evolve, and make the bilateral relationship more reciprocal, open and level finally rendered the policy inoperable. Because Xi Jinping viewed just such changes threatening his one-party rule, there came to be an irreconcilable contradiction at the heart of engagement that killed it."

Yup. And we are tired of their lying, stealing and now loosing global pandemics.

COLLUSION: Harvard chairman indicted for lying about $1.5M Chinese research scheme.

The chairman of Harvard University’s chemistry department was indicted on charges he lied to US government officials about his work for a Chinese technology school while receiving federal research funds.
Wuhan University of Technology, made him a “Strategic Scientist” in 2011, while his Lieber Research Group received $15 million in grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Defense Department.

China’s “Thousand Talents Plan rewards individuals for stealing proprietary information.”

This Duplicitous Clown was bribed up to $50,000 US each month, plus $158,000 and $1.5 million to establish a research lab at Wuhan University.

Lieber lied to federal authorities in 2018 and 2019 about his involvement with the “Thousand Talents Plan” and his link to Wuhan University and I bet he wasn't paying taxes on the bribes.

Don't Trust China, China is Ashole

The problem with our "excellent relationship with China" is that they are lying thieving outlaws.

COLLUSION: Experts: American branch campuses in China: research theft.
This is a wholesale ripoff of American intellectual property and research once a school partners with an institution in China.

American universities “give up autonomy and institutional integrity when operating branch campuses in China.”

They are Lying Outlaws and too expensive to deal with as well as a very horrid terrible government, and gross polluters.

Trump Signs Bill Punishing Chinese Officials Over Uighur Internment Camps
    [IMG]

The human rights measure passed the House last month on a vote of 413-1 and passed the Senate by unanimous consent. It condemns the internment of Uighurs and members of other Muslim minority groups in the Xinjiang region of China. The legislation calls for closing the camps where they are being held.

Being unhappy about this is perfectly reasonable.

But that doesn't change the facts.

We have a complex relationship with China, and you simply can't change that overnight.

We need China to restrain North Korea. We need to literally navigate the quite difficult situation in the China sea. We need to improve our trade relationship with China without creating a massive crisis. We need to try and patch together the alliances in the Pacific we had before Trump.

That's just the headlines, there's dozens of other issues.

It can all be done. But it has to start with diplomacy. (after Trump is gone)

Editorializing that adds no information to the discussion.
Strawman - no one handling these negotiations claims otherwise.
NORKS are on the Chinese leash, they stir them up and they claim we need them to calm them down,
Not a problem if Lying Outlaw China follows international law, and if they refuse to, we aren't going to be able to ass kiss them into compliance, though I'm sure they would enjoy the attempt.
Resisting a wholesale rip off =/= "Creating a massive crisis."
What good are we to China's neighbors in terms of protecting them from Chinese aggression if we let them push us around too?

And with China loosing a global pandemic, they are too expensive to deal with, so we are moving our business elsewhere. It's a damn good lesson for the rest of the world of how NOT to treat one of your best customers if you want keep their business.

Things will change, are changing. The trick is avoiding drama.

I get the feeling you want some drama..
