Yesterday was the 50-year anniversary of "Bloody Sunday," during the civil-rights march between Selma, Alabama and Birmingham. The beatings that took place near the Edmund Pettis Bridge were simply horrific. If dogs were treated this way--let alone human beings--it would be considered terribly inhumane.

The one good thing to come out of this incident was the passage of the Voting Rights Act, less than five months later.

On a more positive note, yesterday was also a personal anniversary of sorts: It marked exactly 10 years since I retired. And that is a much happier anniversary than the one noted previously--to say the least.
