https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/worl...s-in-the-afghan-capital/ar-AANvrSH?li=BBnbfcL There isn't always a friendly air base in the location and at the time you need it.
Aircraft carriers are becoming obsolete. They cost a billion dollars and carry a billion dollars worth of aircraft. What a target! The Navy is moving towards swarming UAV's (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) as well as swarming Surface and Subsurface Vehicles, collectively called "UxV's".
The world is beginning to understand that UxV's don't risk lives and can be just as good as manned aircraft. And without a cockpit, environmental equipment, safety stuff, all the ergonomic falderall, etc., you can afford to buy a lot more of them. In addition, you can make aircraft performance increase exponentially since the system isn't limited by human frailty. By creating robotic ships to carry, deliver and maintain them, the ships can be built without massive human support systems like waste, food, hygiene, etc items. That means more and smaller ships. More, small, faster, nimble ships carrying more aircraft is a winning strategy. And the Navy is heading that way.
And I will wait and see how those actually work in a conflict with a country anywhere close to the technical capabilities of the US. We have already seen the effectiveness of drones in Syria was seriously degraded because of the effectiveness of Russian drone jamming equipment, forcing the US to go back to manned aircraft. This is what all the people screaming drones are the future keep missing. They are great against those who have no abilities other than what you or I could have. But against another nation-state, expect them to be a lot less effective, even useless. We are already fielding such equipment ourselves, and we know the Russians are. Does anybody seriously think China is not as well?
Or, we can spend our money more wisely to help our own nation and stay out of other people's business.
Staying out of other people's business is a good policy... until they kill your family and burn down your home.
You obviously do not understand the nature of radical islam. Radical islam holds that killing non-believers (infidels) is a good thing and the key to reaching Paradise. Paradise is what islam is all about and killing infidels is how you get there. Radical islamists do not care about this life at all. This life is just an entranceway, a foyer to Paradise. They do not care about this life at all. That's why they can put bombs on their children and have them blow up infidels. They are not killing them. They are sending their children to PARADISE. I suggest you read the Book of Sura in the Koran which explains all this. I suggest you talk to veterans who have experienced this. Radical islamists attack infidels. Period. It has nothing to do with "getting in their business". It has to do with the Koran. Radical islamists have been killing infidels for well over a thousand years. They invaded France until stopped by Charles Martel. They hate Jews because they are conveniently close. I learned this from Muslims who are our friends over years in Iraq, Kuwait and more. Where did you get your lollipop/unicorn, "We are the World", "Koom By Ya" views? Baghdad? Kuwait City? Tehran? Riyadh?
1) Depends just what you mean by "smaller". 2) Smaller does not automatically mean "cheaper". Pocket carriers still have to be escorted and resupplied. 3) Notice by advocating pocket carriers you are in effect conceding the need for carriers in the first place. Now you're just debating size.
I've always recognized the strategic necessity for carriers. I just think super carriers are a gigantic waste/unreasonably large target. Many of the missions a supercarrier undertakes could be handled just as well by a smaller carrier, and with more but smaller carriers, we'd have greater strategic coverage with lower cost. We could still group them up for larger missions, and in this age of 'ship killing cruise missiles' losing one of many small carriers is a much smaller strategic loss than losing a single supercarrier.
My grandkids will see force projection from space and will only know of carriers from pictures in history books. Electronics will be unrecognizable as CHAMP technology makes current electronics obsolete.
This is true, until AI becomes more effective. Jamming wont' mean much if they can act independently outside of receiving their initial objective.
But the fact that they do that proves they themselves are heretics. Like Jews and Zoroastrians, Christians are "People of the Book" under Islam, and NOT Infidels. And any that claims otherwise is going against the writings of the Prophet.
Which will never happen. Nobody is going to turn over the killing of another to a machine. Especially if it would be involved anywhere even close to friendlies or neutral parties.
Exactly! For those who aren't aware....the seafloor is littered with "impregnable/unsinkable" warships....lose a supercarrier, lose a LOT.
Our carrier fleet is aging in general and im sure Biden will feel no need to increase their number. We also lost a helo carrier due to sabatage. China is supposed to have an entire branch of its military dedicated to missiles, including supersonic anti ship missiles.
