    Not here

Yeah we have a decent level of cynicism about politicians but we ALSO have a thing called the "Tall Poppy Syndrome" The TPS means that any australian will consider himself just as good as the PM or even the Queen. It means that the bigger you are as a public figure the more likely you are to be brought down.

Again you are confusing American Culture with Australian politics

Since right after politicians lying to voters was a free speech issue? This law means the government, with taxpayer funding, can take anyone to court and of course the defendant will be paying his own bills. The government will say that the carbon tax is not responsible for any increase so the defendant will be forced to prove his statement was correct...down to the penny.

Lefists hate free speech. Actually, government hates free speech which is why it's in our Constitution.

The ACCC is an independent body. The government is not directing it, telling it who to sue or whatnot.

Rangel is elected though isn't he? Surely the electorate can refuse to elect him?

That's not the case and I've shown that it's not the case. Once again, a business - as is the case at the moment - will not be able to lie about its cost structure or to issue misleading statements about its cost structure or its business operations. That has been the law for years here. Businesses have merely been reminded of the law, that if they push their prices up they can't misrepresent the contribution of the carbon tax, that's all. It's not an attack on free speech, it's part of the continuing prohibition on misrepresentation in business.

Yeah, a number of businesses have been blaming increased costs for months on the carbon tax even though it didn't exist. That's a lie.

They'll try it on, hence the requirement for the law on misrepresentation. They know that there is a lot of misinformation and straight-out ignorance about the carbon tax and they're hoping to use it to force up their prices.

    Genau

Government Strangles Free Speech to Protect Tax, period. And they probably do lots of other things, too. They create taxes a lot more often than they eliminate them.

You're right. Businesses should be totally allowed to lie to their customers.

I think this is where the confusion is. We know that it has been illegal for many years for a business to make misrepresentations to the public. At common law it was called cheating and usually applied to weights and measures. Anyway there has been no special legislation enacted to require businesses not to lie about the carbon tax, it's just a reminder that the law prohibiting misrepresentation is there and it will be used if a business tries to cheat the public by blaming the carbon tax. Business as usual.

What is it about right wing that causes them to wade into threads without actually READING the posts or even working out what it is really about??

    A) Not a new law
    b) Happening in Australia not America
    c) will not be going to court
    d) American constitution does NOT repeat NOT cover Australia

Since bowerbird has no problem with silencing Lord Monckton, et al. there should no no objection to silencing pro-AGW liars like Mann and Al Gore.
