If you add in the Value Added Tax they must pay on every thing they buy, add to that higher over all taxes + gap insurance I doubt they are paying half. I wouldn't doubt they were paying more, just the cost is hidden and spread out over everything they buy. Try comparing the price of a car and a 19% sales tax on top of an extra 1/3 to the price of the car in VAT in Germany.

I'd say it was substantial.
