The $1.1 million (yep, you read that right) Obamamobile is, according to the Associated Press, "an impenetrable-looking conveyance the size of a cross-country Greyhound, painted all in black, with dark tinted windows and flashing red and blue lights." The rubber is hitting the road for the president's current trip to Iowa, Minnesota, and Illinois.

Two of these superbuses were commissioned by the Secret Service to chauffeur the commander-in-chief around the country -- along with the eventual Republican presidential candidate and visiting dignitaries. While these babies don't come cheap, the protection service decided the buses, normally leased and retrofitted to provide presidential protection, would pay for themselves over their projected 10-year lifespan.

President Barack Obama's limo is a "Beast" but his new bus is a even more of a monster.

The president swept onto the campaign trail with a sleek and even sinister looking set of wheels with blacked out windows worth $1.1 million. The Secret Service won't reveal specifics on the high-tech monster buses but said that they have similar features to "the Beast," a tricked-out limo and the president's regular ride. That official Cadillac comes with thick, reinforced doors and reportedly is equipped with bulletproof glass that can withstand a rocket-propelled grenade or a citizens attack by Tea Party enthusiasts!

The cruiser has definitely caught notice on the Web. Yahoo! lookups have revved up for "obama bus tour," "obama bus tour schedule," and the "obama bus" in the last day.

Meanwhile, Sarah Palin has been tooling around Iowa in her own sweet ride as part two of her "One Nation" bus tour. The ex-Alaska governor's bus is a much less expansive, flashier model, at least on the outside, covered with red, white, and blue images of the Liberty Bell, the Constitution, the American flag, and Sarah Palin's offical signature. Maybe the two can drag race when they visit the same location on the same day!

What a pimp-mobile. Guess it woulda been outta the question to attach anything patriotic like a flag or the presidential seal on the side, huh?

Got those pretty chrome wheels, though. Pimp-mobile deluxe.

Bush used the same Canadian Manufactured bus for his bus tour.

    http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/...us-but-bush-did-same-20110817,0,6993533.story

As President Barack Obama traveled to the first of two “town hall” stops in western Illinois today, top national and state Republicans criticized his campaign-style visit and criticized his use of a taxpayer-funded Canadian-manufactured bus as part of a jobs tour.

But no mention was made by Republican National Chairman Reince Priebus or Illinois GOP Chairman Pat Brady that a re-election seeking President George W. Bush used a bus from the same manufacturer, Quebec-based Prevost, for a spring 2004 “Yes, America Can” campaign tour through the Midwest.

Obama ends a three-day Midwest bus tour today, traveling aboard one of two $1.1 million Prevost buses purchased by the Secret Service. Previously, the Secret Service said, it leased buses and fitted them with security and communications gear, then stripped them of the equipment afterward. Bush’s 2004 opponent, Democratic Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., also campaigned in a bus from the same firm.

To properly safeguard the President of the United States of America? Money is almost no object. Heck- I'd be surprised if the thing didn't have .50 cal turrets on top "just in case".

    Stop being ignorant.

How much of that 1.1 million is for up-armoring a bus? It's not like the president can travel in a normal bus.

    You are funny, jmpet.

This "new" (inexperienced) sheriff will not be our sheriff for long!

He will soon be replaced by a real sheriff from the great state of Texas!

After three years, Barack Obama and George Bush have become quite identical in their policies and their differences have become very minor! They ignore Congress when it comes to their war policies and they both think they can spend their way back into national economic prosperity. Obama, like Bush, has increased the power of the NSA, he has broadened the scope of warrantless wiretapping of Americans and both have done nothing to scale back and limit the abuses of the Patriot Act. Obama is clearly the greatest authoritarian and one of the phoniest and most insincere presidents we have ever had.

The liberals in this group cannot bring themselves to admit Barack Obama is a liberal elitist. Obama has been given everything all of his life. Other people (William Ayers) have even written his books for him. Obama has never understood the principles of hard work, personal responsibility, getting a good education and ownership of homes and small businesses offer the pathway to prosperity.

    You are very correct, SMW.

I wonder if Barack Obama will use one of his two new armored monster buses to travel on his vacations for his frequent golf outings, courtesy of the U.S. taxpayers?

That is radar-absorbant paint...the Secret Service mandates it on any Presidential vehicle.

The wheels are not chrome, they are aluminum, either Alcoas or Accurides, pretty much standard on any late-model highway coach and very common on OTR tractor-trailers.

And actually, $1.1 million for a tour bus is NOT that much...an entertainer's tour bus can EASILY top $2 million!

    Come now, Jarlaxle!

You are making this stuff up and you know it!

Besides the problem is not the cost of the buses, but where they were made. If Obama sincerely wants to put Americans back to work, why didn't he have these two (yes, two!) expensive buses made by American workers in the USA? Instead, he had them made in Canana!

I'm still wondering why the few Americans who pay income tax bought President Obama's campaign bus and not his boss, the Teachers' Unions.

Actually, I'm not...I am well aware what Accurides look like.

I recall there are no longer any companies building coach buses in the US. I used to drive them, other than one old GMC (built when Kennedy was in the White House), all were built in Canada (MCI, Prevost) or Europe (Setra, VanHool).

All US candidates running for office in the past decade have used this particular Canadian bus company.

The bus that Ronald Reagan used for one of his bus tours:

    Buch-Cheney 2004:

The SS commissioned the new buses which should have a service life of 10 years and, according to the organization tasked with protecting our Presidents, will save money in the long run while allowing the stalwart agents of the SS to provide the level of security that THEY want for our country's leader.

A bus will also be available for the opposing candidate. Can't wait to hear the right-wing howl about whoever that may be riding around in his/her own "megabeast".

An entertainer would use the bus for more than three days.
$2.000.000 for a tour bus? A business associate of mine that builds these would like to get a few of those orders. She would retire early.

By no means all MCI's are US-built...offhand, the one I drove (a 1994 MC-12, as I recall, a former 'Hound) was from Canada. (VIN began with "2".) I am making nothing up.

Again: I used to drive buses. ONE coach (out of eight) was US-built, and it was a GMC PD4106 built during the Kennedy administration. (It's still running, in fact!) The company had two MCI's, both built in Winnipeg. (I've also seen Mexican-built MCI's, like this one.)

Both had the same type of aluminum alloy wheels as Obama's tour bus, as did all the buses except the 4106. (A coach without Accurides is very unusual.)

I was mistaken, MCI does build a few buses in the US. (MCI, clearly, didn't put in the lowest bid.)

    From Marathon Coach website:

Q: What are the prices of the Marathon line? A: New coaches range in price from $1.5 to $2.5 million; top-quality pre-owned coaches begin at $200,000. Marathon's pre-owned coaches are completely refurbished and certified with a limited, six-month warranty.
    http://www.marathoncoach.com/about/faq.cfm

The SS said that buying these buses will save money in the long run while ensuring a greater level of security.

Are you saying that these busses cost more than the reported $1.1 million?
And, what is "the long run" when he only planned to use them for three days?
