Why is the percentage of black single-parent homes soo much greater than for whites?

It used to not be this way.

Decades ago, the percentages were similar.

Now, more than 70% of black kids are raised in single-parent homes, while for whites its around 23%.

    Why is this?

My thoughts, are that it is possible that with the advent of various welfare programs like food stamps, Section 8 housing vouchers, Medicaid, black mothers felt they could do it alone and didn't need to have an abusive man around or simply have a man around to get by?

I think its hard to imagine black crime rates aren't totally related to single-parent homes, especially poor homes.

Poverty + one parent is a perfect recipe for crime.

looks like i found an answer:

    http://articles.baltimoresun.com/19...quences-poor-families-social-welfare-policies

many states established "man in the house" rules, that disqualified families from getting Welfare money if there was an able-bodied man living in the home.

so if a father lost his job, the best way to feed his kids would be to MOVE out...and rip apart his family.

even single mothers couldnt have a boyfriend live at home and act as a father figure, as he too would be considered "man of the house",.

    wow...just wow.

Yep. This policy should be changed where it is in place. It's part of the cycle that needs to be broken.

so the Conservatives desire to keep women sexually moral, is what actually got black fathers to skip town.

in fact, if he wanted the kids to have food, he had to dissappear.

    thanks Conservatives!!!!

The article you linked didn't say anything about conservatives.

Conservatives are the ones who pushed for the "man in household" disqualifiers.

they wanted to keep women "moral".

That's what you are saying, but I've never heard of that and didn't see any evidence of it in the article you linked, so for now I regard that as your personal opinion not supported by facts.

Conservatives have not had that much input into social services,
