Even if they were carrying guns (which they were not), I don't think that gives occupying forces the right to kill them on sight. Imagine if Chinese helicopters flew into the United States and shot anyone on sight who was carrying a rifle! Carrying a weapon in a warzone almost always gets you shot at and in modern warfare more than likely killed. You don't kow what as going on in that area immediately before hand. Every Army in the world has a standing policy of shooting fleeing enemies weaponless at the moment or not. Manning on the other hand swore an oath and based on that oath was granted a top secret military clearance and betrayed that oath. The greatest damage done may have ben to American diplonatic efforts to try and end this mess. He may well, because of that, be guilty of the greatest crime in war of all. Almost all Iraqis had access to weapons so how many other random civilians did the US military mow down? What else dont we know about? Was it routine for the occupation forces to spray random people? And how do you justify their standard protocal of killing civilians that go to help the people they kill? What about the children they wounded and were ordered to leave to their fate?
