Britain has invaded all but 22 countries in the world in its long and colourful history, new research has found. A new study has found that at various times the British have invaded almost 90 per cent of the countries around the globe. The analysis of the histories of the almost 200 countries in the world found only 22 which have never experienced an invasion by the British. Among this select group of nations are far-off destinations such as Guatemala, Tajikistan and the Marshall Islands, as well some slightly closer to home, such as Luxembourg. The analysis is contained in a new book, All the Countries We've Ever Invaded: And the Few We Never Got Round To. Stuart Laycock, the author, has worked his way around the globe, through each country alphabetically, researching its history to establish whether, at any point, they have experienced an incursion by Britain. Only a comparatively small proportion of the total in Mr Laycock's list of invaded states actually formed an official part of the empire. The remainder have been included because the British were found to have achieved some sort of military presence in the territory however transitory either through force, the threat of force, negotiation or payment. Incursions by British pirates, privateers or armed explorers have also been included, provided they were operating with the approval of their government. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/history/...-of-ten-countries-so-look-out-Luxembourg.html Anybody agree with author that Britain is the most aggressive country in the world?
no. was maybe but not is ... it is no longer powerful enough to be the most aggressive ... the US currently spends almost 5 times the amount of its nearest rival on its military, and a greater percentage of GDP than any other country. There are also US military personnel in 148 countries. how many are the british currently in?
No doubt today, Britains influences less that it was as much of the empires gradually attained independence. In my view today Britain became Americas very junior partner. > However Britain, during some centuries was the world's dominant colonial power. And much of Britain's wealth has always been generated by the total exploitation of its colonies.
During which centuries? Neither the 20th, nor the 18th. Bunch of failed imperialists, the lot of them.
I hope you've heard about so-called Britain's imperial century 1815–1914. Also from the 18th century on, Britain became the first industrialized nation. By 1922 the British Empire held sway over about 458 million people, one-fifth of the world's population at the time. The empire covered more than 33,700,000 km2, almost a quarter of the Earth's total land area. http://images.yandex.ru/yandsearch?...1602_or.jpg&pos=0&rpt=simage&lr=213&noreask=1 However in the 20th century, in world affairs USSR and US definitely made Britain's role less important.
1914 minus 1815 equals? Not even a hundred years. And by 1922 (your pick), Australia and Canada had already declared their independence. Try again?
In my view Britain became the true Empire after the seven years' war, when poms screwed France and got India and Canada. 1763-1914 = over 150 years. However it's a good result isn't it? really? what about the statute of Westminister? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statute_of_Westminster_1931
Come on, be honest. Napoleon and Hitler were not British, neither were Caesar and Charlemagne. And who is the biggest country on the planet nowadays, huh?
How long was Adolf in charge of the Nazis? And how long was Napoleon in charge of France? That's a strange coinsidence but Russians and poms got both guys. Though IMHO the clash between Napoleon and Russia was a fatal mistake for both sides. Russian Federation?
Not long, thankfully. Napoleon got greedy, and lost. It seems to be the fate of any imperialist, Great Britain included. And yes I am quite happy with that result, I am no fan of empires
absolutely correct same here. also I don't like persons like Napoleon, Hitler, Stalin etc. IMHO Napoleone's marshal Jean Bernadotte (Karl Johan King of Sweden) had a good tattoo "Death to the king"
- You French fight for money, while we British fight for honour. - Sir, a man fights for what he lacks the most.
Well it WAS. Not now though. As far as Imperialists go it's right up there with the worst. Not much to brag about but strangely it turned out - after a very bad start - to be not so bad after all.
