The latest poll now shows more people support the recall than oppose it. 51-40 support removing Gavin Newsom. The GOP have several candidates with celebrity Larry Elder becoming the most popular. However everyone seems to be talking about a Democrat and it's not Newsom. It's 29 year old YouTube star Kevin Paffrath. He is quickly gaining in popularity. With Newsom now getting serious competition from another Democrat and more people now supporting the recall we could be looking at a New Govenor and a much more heated race. https://nymag.com/intelligencer/202...th-the-democrat-who-could-replace-newsom.html
Are there any Americans who are concerned about this apparent shift from career politicians (who have their own sets of issues) to candidates who generally only get attention because they're already famous (and often famous for being famous)? I know its an extreme and obscure idea, but wouldn't it be a good idea to elect a governor who has the skills and abilities to actually excel in the difficult task of running a US state?
Or even an Elf... in 2018 Paffrath delivered flowers to Cardone's office staff while dressed as a Christmas elf, reportedly running through Cardone's offices. Paffrath was charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct, but the charges were later dismissed.
Got my recall voter booklet yesterday. Two things to vote on - Should Newsom be recalled and three pages of candidates ~50, but who's counting Another observation - I have not seen Newsom in an ad for quite a while. Fauxahontas, aka Elisabeth Warren is ranting about a "Republican recall"; she mention Newsom in passing. Haven't seen Newsom with a speaking spot. Larry Elder is doing speaking spots.
Well no. The people considered qualified are losing seats to the people with more popularity. It's become a popularity contest more or less. I love Candace for her ideals and beliefs and those make her popular among millions of conservatives but that does not make her qualified to run our country or be a Senator. Having said that most qualified people seem to be corrupt or only care about themselves so I will take a chance on the more popular people who actually care about us.
Or the 2 Democrats devide the votes and Larry Elder pulls off another Arnold. It's unlikely to happen again but still possible.
So, what does this mean? A recall is like "termination" for the end of one's elected term? And, if so, does that mean any of the potential candidates to fill that vacancy are from the same party or do the people get to vote as if it was a "normal" election (like would happen at the true end of someone's term)? Where do those potential candidates come from and, in theory, is it possible that someone could lead the fight for a recall just to unseat a person? Or does there have to be some kind of distance between them (the ousted person and the one that takes his/her place)?
His term is not up until 2022 when he is up for re-election in the midterms. This is a special election to see if he can finish that term. It's actually easy to get on the ballot. There was over 100 people on the last recall. Whoever gets the most votes wins. In a normal election it's just the top Democrat vs the top other candidate. A 1vs1. With a recall it could be 50-100+ people in a free for all. There could be a hundred Democrats battling it out. Now California being very liberal it's a guarantee a Democrat will win. However this was not the case in the last recall election. Two Democrats were popular enough to both get alot of votes. Govenor Davis being one of them. They split the Democratic vote allowing Arnold Schwarzenegger to win. Here is another good example of vote splitting. In 2020 Ralph Warnock ran for a seat in GA but had fewer Democratic votes then the Republican votes. So he should have lost but not all of those votes went to a single Republican. Loefler had about 1 million votes and Doug Collins had about 600,000 votes. Now if Doug had not ran Loefler would have had majority of votes and be a Senator right now thus giving Republicans majority in Senate and allowing Mitch to be the leader. The problem is because Doug took votes that would have went to Loefler had he not ran he split the vote. Because nobody scored 51% of the vote there was a runoff race giving the Democrats a chance to win both seats. For Govenor Davis in 2003 he would have had the majority of votes and would have won the recall had another big Democrat not ran against him. It's impossible for a Republican to win in California in a normal election. The only chance Republicans have is with a recall and a split vote. Still that's a long shot. Most likely Kevin or Gavin will win. Most Democrats including Nancy Pelosi and Biden are backing Gavin Newsom but polls show now more people support recalling him. It's rare for a recall to get enough signatures to pass but Gavin told everyone to stay home for Thanksgiving while he went out to eat and that angered many people. I'm not sure exactly why he is not very popular anymore. Lastly whoever wins the recall will only win the remaining time for his term thus the winner will have a normal election next year and that will just be a 1vs1 with a Democrat most likely winning that one. The recall does not affect normal elections. It's just to find a replacement to finish out what's left of the 4 year term for Govenor. Same for Ralph Warnock in GA. He won the special election and the remainder of that term is up in 2022 so he will have to fight for his seat again. All Senate races are split up so every election you have some across America to vote on. A Senate term is 6 years so for every three elections in a state two will have a Senate race. There will never be two in the same year for any state unless one is a normal election and the other is a special election to finish out the time on the vacated seat. The recall will be interesting for sure.
I don't live in California so I honestly have no idea who is popular there but Kevin and Larry seem to be getting the most publicity right now. My wife was born and raised there. She left long ago and even when she lived there she never knew who was the Govenor. She was not into politics. She still is not as much into politics.
No I am just really into elections. I knew almost nothing of the political world prior to 2016. Now I am so into it I constantly read the latest predictions on elections and soak up any information I can. I'm not a expert by far.
You are very good at explaining things. I hate politics and I don't like talking about dumb people but your post didn't make me want to stick ice picks in my eyeballs. Thanks for walking me through that.
