This is probably the best game on the market right now, yet I constantly hear it dissed for various reasons. I've never actually bothered to play it online, I'm speaking from the single player mode in CoD Modern Warfare II - it's probably the closet you'll ever get to feeling like you're in a movie. So why all the hate for CoD?

Everybody on my friends list plays CoD online. I am like you SP only. I recently played for the first time CoD Modern Warfare 3 and I loved it. It is like playing a 6 hour movie. But because it is only 6 hours long it is not worth 60$ to me. So I wait years till it comes down to a reasonable price before I play a CoD game. CoD is the premiere FPS out there IMO. I have yet to hear anyone say anything bad about it.

I've heard various people online say that it's 'unoriginal' or that it 'requires no challenge' and that it's basically just a money-making machine.

Not sure why anyone would call CoD unoriginal as nothing measures up to CoD although the new Battlefield game does come close. Sure its a money making machine, but if my memory serves me correctly a CoD game can cost well over 100 million to produce. Now what I don't understand are those whom criticize Skyrim... but that is for another thread.

I've never played Skyrim but I've played the game before it (Oblivion) and it's bad - the only thing about it that it has going for it is the graphics - everything else in the game (characters, locations, combat, etc) is generic, recycled, and uninspired, and I get bored after about 20 minutes of playing it.

So if Skyrim is anything like Oblivion or any other "Elder Scrolls" game then I totally understand the criticism.

I agree, Oblivion sucked. Morrowind and Skyrim are much better, but Morrowind is the best in the series IMO.

I like CoD, but, after purchasing every iteration of it, I think I'm suffering from franchise fatigue...

    Still a good game, though...

Ya, I hear ya. The latest CoD really pushed the Sci-Fi envelope. With that said, the last CoD was the best in the series IMO, but not because of the Sci-Fi. I would like to see games explore virgin territory, like WWI or the Korean War. I liked the new Assassins Creed III with its whole Revolutionary War theme.

    It really isnt.

Hate for CoD is pretty easy to explain:

Every year they release a new game, none of which have been as good as the one released back in 2007 (although I've yet to play the latest, so it might be an improvement).

I finished Modern Warfare 2 in a single sitting. It took me... 5-6 hours? That's shamefully, almost criminally, short. I've played DLC that lasts longer than that.

And as for it feeling like being in a movie - that's not inherently good, but not inherently bad, I suppose. It depends on the movie it feels like. The original Modern Warfare had the heart of Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan - war was hell. You and your friends fought like heroes and died, unloved, unmourned, thousands of miles from home, for a cause that the public would never hear of. War made you into a corspe, not a hero. Modern Warfare 2 had the heart of Commando - absurd war things happened and stuff blew up. All the significant characters survived, and the player never had to feel any emotion aside from adrenaline. They did try to bring in some emotion with the "No Russian" level, which I respect, but they didn't quite nail it.

I don't even mean to imply that the CoD series is necessarily bad - its really pretty good. It has very tight shooting mechanics, for instance. In terms of delivering an impactful experience to the player, it's really just an average shooter series dressed up to look very pretty.

If it's single player shooters you love, I would heartily recommend:
    • The Mass Effect Series
    • Spec Ops: The Line
    • Deus Ex: Human Revolution (or the Original, although it's very old)
    • Both Call of Duty 2 and 4

My issues with Call Of Duty are based more on how everyone else tries to copy them than it is on them. If what happened in the CoD universe stayed in the CoD universe, it would be much more enjoyable for me. Unfortunatley, now my favorite game series, Battlefield, is trying their best to emulate CoD style combat, which is basically jumpy fast quake-style reflex fighting. My experience with Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer also taught me the value of having player controlled servers with admins because the amount of hacking I came across was unreal. I also refuse to support their games anymore simply because they shut down the Modern Warfare 2 multi-player, something that wouldn't have happened if they took the sane sensible approach of allowing player run servers that would still use the matchmaking.

CoD games shine in the single player arena, and in that aspect, I haven't played an FPS game that has compared. Everything else though, reeks of 13 year old console immature bull(*)(*)(*)(*).

For me, the perfect balance would be for CoD to cut out multiplayer entirely and build a bigger better single player. They retain their core strengths and other game companies stop trying to copy that absolute worst parts about the game attempting to woo fickle junior high console gamers.

You have my vote... but most of my friends on XBL will want your head for even suggesting getting rid of MP. Sadly I think the MP portion of the game is the money maker and the reason most people buy it. Many of the people on my XBL friends list love CoD but never even bother to play the SP Campaign. Even to this day, almost every time I log into XBL, there will be at least one friend playing CoD MP.
