According to the FBI, more than 95% of civilian-involved defensive gun usages (DGU) are resolved peacefully, with no injuries sustained by either party.

If you search “defensive gun usage" you’ll find it happens anywhere from 500k – 3.5 million times annually (in the US). The raw numbers come from the CDC, most recently from a study ordered by President Obama in 2013.

While injuries and fatalities resulting from those encounters are delineated in the Obama study, peaceful resolutions are not (one wonders why; I am forced to consider political motivations). Depending on who’s digging into the data, DGUs where the weapon is brandished but not fired & no one is hurt occur anywhere from 200k - 1 million times every year.

When I was an infant we took a day trip to the mountains and stopped at one of my parents’ favorite spots. During our stay a couple bikers rolled in. Dad could tell they were trouble and loaded wife & kid into the car.

During the load up one of the bikers shouted at dad to “hand over summa that slant eyed pu$$y!” Loudmouth wheeled his bike about 4 feet off the back bumper and dismounted. He walked to the driver’s side window and leaned in to find himself looking down the barrel of a .357. He and his compadre saddled up and rode off.

25 years later I owned a 1965 Plymouth Barracuda. One day I towed it to a building where I was going to work on it. As I pulled onto the property there were a couple guys about my age sharing a crack pipe. I rolled down the window and said “Hate to tell you guys, but this is private property and you’ll need to clear off.” They both snarled and cursed. One of them picked up a piece of rebar and both advanced. I let them see my pistol and told them to simmer down. Both men split.

In both instances: no shots fired and nobody hurt.

I've posted these anecdotes a number of times on this board. Curiously, not a single anti-gunner has been able to stipulate whether they commend or condemn our having been armed on those occasions. They always default to lame deflections like "I won't answer that - it's a trap!" The reality couldn't be more obvious: intellectual cowardice.

I read about the SVT-40, indeed the Germans used captured copies in the Wehrmacht. But they managed to make not very much of these rifles, and then production was stopped due to the complexity of the technology and the high cost.

The main weapons of the infantrymen of that war were the Mosin rifle called "trehlineyka" (three-lines), PPD submachine guns, PPSH. There was also a Sudaev PPS machine gun similar in appearance to the German mp40, but there were not very many of them

It sounds like you know your way around firearms.

I've got a 1942 SVT-40 and a bushel of Mosin Nagant rifles and carbines. They were so cheap at the time and surprisingly accurate for what they are even with cheap, old corrosive ammunition.
I don't use corrosive ammunition in the SVT-40 because it so much more trouble to clean thoroughly.

    Thanks,

I'm glad that your personal experience was better and hope you have no reason to call the police.

Do you mind describing the experience that made you feel like you had to call for help?

    Thanks,

Please note that I used the word "deploy", not "shoot".

In one instance I fired a round into the floor to repel 4 home invaders. My other instances in civilian life only required that I draw and point a firearm to deter and repel individuals whose intentions did not include making me any happier, healthier or wealthier.

My friend who shot and killed a rapist did involve the police but the incident never made even local news.

The five other incidents did not include the criminal being shot but the mere sight of an armed individual was enough to deter the attackers so the police were never notified and crimes that don't happen don't make the news.

So, I hope that you see the degree to which DGUs are far more common than the misleading claims of gun ban groups.

    Thanks,
