Matias Reyes it rather seems was just one of the attackers who gangraped Trishia Meili but was never caught, and since he probably does a long stretch in prison and has nothing to lose, he made out to make system look bad and claim to have been a lone assailant in the incident, and may even get part of the potential $300 million settlement for his false confession deal. This brings to mind another case I recall but not the names, involving two men who were convicted for having committed a single or double homicide and were handed down life sentences, so just for the fun of it and having nothing to lose they then confessed to 200 other murders just to show how inefficient the police in their county or state are in solving or finding out about homicides. The two were able to reveal either precise or approximate locations of the bodies, but other aspects and details in their confessions did not connect including the wide discrepancies on details in their separate confessions, and it was determined with certainty they could not have committed the murders, and confessed only for kicks and to gain notoriety. If someone also was later charged with one of the other 200 homicides, they could have argued someone else already confessed to it.
