Nazism and fascism are quite different.
Mussolini didn’t commit nearly as many crimes as Hitler did.
Mussolini’s Italy was more like todays Russia than hitlers Germany.

That Hitler was far worse than Mussolini or Franco doesn't mean all three weren't fascists.

 

It doesn't mean Pinochet was either. He did prevent a civil war and was the only dictator I know of who retired in order to introduce a capitalist/democracy, and a very successful one. The international left was certainly disappointed Chile didn't get another Casto but the Chilean people felt quite differently.

Nazi society has no classes, fascist society preserves classes. Nazi were about racial purity and superiority. Fascism looks more at national purity and superiority. So, to fascists new entrants to the national group was permissible, especially if its through annexation and in fascism you can turn just about anyone to a member of fascist society through education, while with Nazis its impossible. That’s why German Nazis were killing off their own Jews, homosexuals, gypsies and other non-aryan groups, while Italian Fascists left those groups largely unharrased. Italian fascist party had a lot of Jewish members in it.
So, yeah, putting nazism and fascism on the same level is just wrong. I think politicians of the time put them on equal level because Mussolini was allied with Hitler (and not even all the time, sometimes they had major disagreements).
Fascism and nazism are more like socialism and communism. Same branch of ideology, but significantly different.

Communists are often particularly bad because they also confiscate property and thereby generate even more resistance than fascists who leave wealth in private hands. More resistance requires more repression.

There is debate over Pinochet because there was the absence of national renewal that accompanies classic fascism. There's no doubt he was a dictator.

It was Pinochet's reaction of creating a dictatorship to prevent the establishment of a socialist state (it was indeed under way) that I submit marks him as a fascist. BTW, I lived across from a dairy farm owned by a Chilean refugee who had his farm confiscated by Allendé. He was a refugee twice in his life--he was a German Jew who escaped Germany as a child in 1939 (yes, that's 1939).

 

Nazis didn't end classes in Germany if for no other reason than they preserved personal wealth that maintains classes. A classless fascist society is all but impossible.

Communism has never existed, but socialist states of varying brutality have been created. At the extremes, we have the Soviet Union, China, and Cambodia, and less brutal are Yugoslavia and Cuba.
