Hard to blame them that they do not want to be overwhelmed by the US effluent incessantly pumped out by the likes of Lady Gaga.

China has a cultural history second to none, going back thousands of years.

Why would the Chinese government allow that to be destroyed by the third-rate rubbish the US regards as the epitome of its "civilisation"?

I am sure this has nothing to do with government control.

The fact that the Chinese use the internet which was primarily developed in the US (although I hate to admit it) would belie your claim.

This is a form of censorship. Censorship is a bad thing. Even if you don't like US Culture it's literally evil to censor it.

Censoring should only happen when there's real risk. 98% of US Culture isn't risking anything. I'd understand if they'd not like the war parts and stuff but they seem to be banning a very broad idea.

I mean Lady Gaga is kind of crazy but she's not evil. There's nothing morally terrible about her. It's ridiculous and corrupt to ban her.

    What exactly is "American culture"?

Your music originated from Africa and Ireland. Even your food didn't originate entirely from America. Many dishes originated from Europe, eg hamburgers, hot dogs and French fries.

Clothing, not even jeans are wholly American.

I wouldn't criticize the Chinese for not wanting too much foreign influence. Every nation has this right... or should...

Simply banning cons from America would make any place or person regain their love and respect for the US. A great reason not to close Gitmo.

If the Chinese people didn't want it there would be no reason to ban it. I'm not a fan of government deciding which movies or music we can or cannot spend our hard earned money on. Though in China I image they are cheap due to all the piracy. Which bring me to this question. If the Chinese government can control what their citizens listen to and watch how are the so incapable of cracking down on piracy of the physical products?

An country wanting to keep 2.5 men away from their citizens, is alright by me.

Curb Your Enthusiasm is of course a different story.

You've done a great job of spreading hispanic/black gang culture to the rest of the world though...

Plus lets not forget the US censors a bunch of stuff which in Europe we find laughable - "wardrobe malfunction" anyone? Ohhhhhh noooooo, a nipple - the pain, the pain!

Does banning American culture include banning American cuisine?

There are certain things which can and likely should be regulated in a society; but I think China is risking a LOT in trying to (overly) control their modern society. Whether they WANT it to or not, things will change.

Yes, the Chinese people demand that Burgers be Banned. (I could agree if its Burger King). It makes perfect sense that they should wish to return to their normal diet of Goat soup gulash:

physical product is hard to crack down, because there are too many people in any size of city doing it. however, internet download from different website can be blocked if the content is not what they want you to hear/watch.

The Chinese government is the biggest destroyer of Chinese culture. It has been since the Maoist revolution when the military began targeting, discouraging and suppressing ethnic groups throughout China in the name of cultural homogeneity. This still continues today. Funny the Chinese government talks about preserving culture when their primary motivation is to herd the entire country into expensive mega-cities ruled by a brutal police state that censors what information they receive.

We should ban Chinese imports into the US.

Lady GaGa only appeals to our more freaky liberal types. (I assume you like her a lot) As to the Chinese government preferring that the people remain barefooted and up to their knees in rice paddies, cowering in fear of some local warloard. What better way to maintain rule by the elites. Sorta like Islamic goals.

So China "destroys" the culture(s) it is bent of protecting from American tripe?

Aren't you getting confused with the difference between culture and politics?

BTW, banning Chinese imports would destroy much of your economic base. Which is now centred in China.

There would be no-one to wipe your bums.

China is wise to ban decadent Western culture. Look what it's done to America.
