Joe Biden wants to place sanctions on Russian gas knowing that Europe needs the gas. Europe can't pay Russia directly for the same gas through the same pipelines. Instead Russia sells the gas to China and China Sinopec sells the gas to Europe with 200% markup. In the end Russia still sells gas and Europe still gets Russian gas, but Joe's handlers now also get a cut.
So Russia sells their oil to China for cheaper then they sell it to themselves? The principles of supply and demand get suspended with their magic soil or something? Wouldn't be necessary. It would take a lot of rebalancing, but Europe could get by with no russian gas by bringing its other sources of electricity other than natural gas back up to full capacity, getting people to use the summer to switch from furnaces to electric heat, upping output of field in the north and importing more through Turkey. It would be disruptive, but doable.
