Movement of love, generosity sweeps Poland as it opens arms to Ukrainians
By John Hall, Texas Baptist Men
    [IMG]
Humanitarian aid supplies are distributed in to support Ukrainian refugees at a shelter just outside of Bialystok, Poland, in March 2022. More than 60% of the 110 Poland Baptist churches are responding to the needs of Ukrainian refugees. | Texas Baptist Men/John Hall
CHELM, Poland — With little more than the clothes on their back, hundreds of Ukrainian women and children wait hours in line to cross into Poland as part of the largest movement of people in Europe since World War II. They shuffle their feet quietly, even apprehensively, toward an unknown future in an unfamiliar country.

They’re stunned when they arrive. Volunteers have taped Ukrainian flags in their car windows and signs in Ukrainian reading, “free rides to shelter.” The drivers take the refugees to the Baptist church in Chelm, only a few kilometers up the road where people from around the world — Poland, Latvia, England, the United States, to name a few — are offering a place of safety and security for a few hours, few days or as long as they need it.

Families sit in stunned silence in an impromptu reception area where church volunteers tell the refugees the church has free food, drinks, showers and places to sleep. The congregation even has a set-up children’s area where they can play with bubbles or watch educational videos projected on a screen.

“What we’re seeing is a movement of love and generosity across this nation. Poles are opening their doors and arms to Ukrainians. They are taking them into their churches. They are taking them into their homes. They are feeding them. They are caring for them,” said Marek Glodek, president of the Baptist Union of Poland.

“This is what Jesus calls His believers to do all the time. Polish Christians are taking the teachings of Jesus seriously and living them out each day during this situation.”…

This is a great story. It and many like it across Eastern Europe are being replayed repeatedly. These heartwarming stories of Christian love and charity in meeting people’s needs needs to be told. I encourage everyone to read all the rest of the article. It’s so uplifting in such a dark world.

So many Protestant denominations we are all familiar with in America are over there providing aid to those in need and Americans of those same denominations here are generously providing money and material support for those in need. I’m sure the Orthodox and Catholics are doing likewise.

WE could disassemble Trump's wall and send it over to build temporary shelter for displaced persons ... it would be the Christian thing to do.

You forgot the nondenominatinal which is neither protestant, Catholic, or Eastern Orthodox.

The shelter should be temporary and they should be sent back once the Ukraine is no longer at war.

If Ukraine survives and the Russians have left the country that should happen. If the war is over because Russia won and is an occupying power, then no.

Not necessarily. I know several nondenominational churches that derive their doctrine mostly from Catholic teachings. Most Christian churches, including Catholic and Eastern Orthodox, use the Nicene Creed as their affirmation of faith. What seperates most of the denominations, including Catholic and Eastern Orthodox is not basic tenet theology, bot cultural religious practices. However, what makes nondenominational churches unique is that they are not as timid or inflexible in the doctrinal teachings or service as any of the denominations are.

The fact that the 'head' of the Russian Orthodox church publicly supports Putin's actions, is quite telling, disturbing and, even evil.

That's good. These things bring out the best in people, and not just Christians but all kinds of people, including atheists.

Because the Russian Orthodox Church has always had a history of supporting those in power that allow the Church run the government.

there are several categories of non denominational churches, but the easons for the "great schism" seem trivial 1000 years later .....

A succession of ecclesiastical differences and theological disputes between the Greek East and Latin West preceded the formal split that occurred in 1054.[1][3][4] Prominent among these were: the procession of the Holy Spirit (Filioque), whether leavened or unleavened bread should be used in the Eucharist,[a] the bishop of Rome's claim to universal jurisdiction, and the place of the See of Constantinople in relation to the pentarchy.[8]

even with my catholic upbringing, matters regarding the holy trinity seem ineffable and unknowable, therefore not worth fighting over.

I am often amazed by the humanity of common people religious or not, American or not. More of this is needed at home and abroad.

Quite a contrast from the reception Central American refugees have gotten in Texas. Must not be any Christians or Baptists in Texas. All those "Christians" that prayed, on "their bible" over tRump must have been using the "do on to others harshly and often" version.

Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is a tent on the Rio Grande.

Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be shunned.

Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit nothing.

    ... That version.

It is. That’s what is wrong with having a state church. Also the head of the Russian Orthodox Church wants to bring the Ukrainian Orthodox Church back under his control.

Every dime that Putin has stolen or acquired in the years of dictatorship should be confiscated and used to help rebuild Ukraine.

What refugees. If people are seeking asylum due to fear of persecution or repression on any number of grounds they go to the nearest country that is safe from those threats, not the one further away with the most economic benefits. Most Ukrainians are going to a bordering nation. There are now some Ukrainian and Russian people on our border seeking asylum while in Mexico and since they are fleeing either a war or a repressive government they certainly qualify. These are not the kind of immigrants the Biden regime is seeking though so we have to watch the regime closely so that they do not try to exclude these refugees like they do the Cubans, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans who really are refugees fleeing oppression and fearing for their lives.
