Cleveland police union asks for suspension of 'open carry' in wake of Baton Rouge, ahead of RNC

He isn't the first individual with firsthand association to law enforcement officials to suggest this, as even some Police Chiefs have weighed in on how difficult open-carry laws make the job, but some have also stressed the importance of respecting 2nd amendment rights in general. Dallas Police Chief David Brown spoke on the subject eloquently following the tragedy in Dallas:

"It's increasingly challenging when people have AR-15's slung over and shootings occur in a crowd and they begin running and we don't know, or, we don't know if they're the shooter or not ...has been the presumption that a good guy with a gun is the best way to resolve some of these things, well, we don't know who the good guy is versus who the bad guy is if everybody starts shooting!"

Gov Kasich is certainly correct in mentioning limited power to fulfill this Police Union's request ahead on the convention in Cleveland, but it certainly opens a worthwhile discussion on the inadvertent problems of open-carry permissions.

i would agree with the union on this one, because of the emotionally charged atmosphere against the cops of late and potential on a copy cat scenario by a extremist in the crowd protest. note isis could blend into the BLM rnc protesters and be instigating or start a fire fight with authoritys

video time 2:12 even in a military parade rouge average soldiers could try to take out there leaders

The police union should refuse to patrol the RNC. It's not worth dying over.

The Police union must be expecting a lot of trouble from left wing riot starters because if they don't show up there wouldn't be a problem.

Yes, Steve. That's what this thread is about. Riot starters (likely left wing) taking advantage of open carry laws in order to commit their acts. What do you think should happen?

If he wasn't arrested, I believe the NRA would consider him a good guy with a gun.

I don't know if suspending rights just because of violent leftists is a good idea. Think about what it could lead to. I hate to say this, but I'm going to Monday quarterback this one.

Edit: suspending open carry rights doesn't mean people still won't be carrying, legally or illegally. Just saying.

I'm sure they would consider him a racist thug, like most of America does.

Kasich is a liberal in Republican clothes.

Which is why he was so strongly rejected in the Republican primaries.

Well, it'd be illegally in that instance... would it not? Wouldn't they be arrested?

    - - - Updated - - -

On the contrary. He's just practicing his 2nd amendment rights.

With that said, how do we effectively argue against folks that claim "open carry and flared tempers are a recipe for disaster... and since we can't rid the world of bad tempers, perhaps we should do something about open carry"?

Nope, sorry, but the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed upon. I despise BLM, but all Americans should have the right to bear arms. If you start making exceptions, our rights will fade away. It is better to take some casualties and maintain our freedoms then to let those freedoms slowly disappear. Once they are gone, they are likely gone forever. More states and cities should allow open carry, in all locations.

Yeah, I think open carry in a situation like this would make it very difficult for law enforcement to determine who is who in an active shooter situation. Concealed carry makes a lot more sense.

Suspending rights willy nilly and unilaterally would set terrible precedent.

Just like the cop said, he doesn't care about the Constitution or human and civil rights. He just wants to oppress people.

Even the slavers let free white men 21 and over vote.

He's not white. To a few only whites have rights. If they are white then they are thugs and have no 2nd amendment rights. Or any for that matter.
They are easy to spot on how they post.

You can't do anything since it's a State law that in compliance with the Second Amendment. You can ask the appropriate State legislature to nullify the law and that's about it.

It would be better if they are white and male and land owners. They should be the only people voting.

In today's environment only fools walk around carrying visible weapons. And they aren't too smart for carrying concealed weapons either.

That's not a legal action anywhere in America.
