I liked this article. Thought it might generate some fun discussion. Not about Game of Thrones or A Song of Ice and Fire as stories, but about politics and how they're presented to Americans.

I do think that calling Martin "The American Tolkien" is an apt irony. Tolkien wrote stories about how the world would return to order and the ugly people would be banished and the trees would blossom if only the proper king would return. Martin writes stories about how kings are generally bad ideas and that everyone, including the kings themselves, would be better off if they just went fishing or something.

But what do you guys think? Is America ready to transcend the "us vs. them" mentality of the overwhelming popular narrative? Could Martin just be one of the forerunners of a deepening of popular American political thought?

I'm assuming that enough of us have read the books to have a discussion about how they reflect upon real-life politics. Is that a silly assumption?

I know this place is kinda republican-heavy, but the rest of us do read, right?

It seems evident to me that American politics is moving toward a bastardized version of a King in that dynasties are preferred starting with the Kennedy's.
