Dart is the name of the NASA mission where a spacecraft was sent to impact an asteroid and see how much the asteroid moved. The name came from "double asteroid redirection test".

The asteroid chose is a small one that orbits a slightly larger asteroid - good in that there is a good frame of reference for measurement and the small impacted asteroid will continue to orbit the larger one - rather than flying off somewhere we don't want it to go.

The idea is that if an asteroid looked like it might hit Earth, we could redirected it enough to miss!

And, it worked! The small asteroid was redirected by more than the NASA team thought it would be! But, still some questions.
