Debunked: the "debunking" of the 1970s scientific consensus on global cooling

Anti-fossil-fuel hysteria mongers have to contrive some way to avoid dealing with the fact that in the 1970s, the scientific consensus was that the world had been cooling, and that this was partly due to human fossil fuel use, and if sustained could become very dangerous. Their solution, as usual: cherry picking, gaslighting, and outright lying.

In 2008, the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society published a paper by
Thomas C. Peterson, William M. Connolley (yes, the same William Connolley who later turned Wikipedia into his own private anti-fossil-fuel hate propaganda blog), and John Fleck entitled, "The Myth of the 1970s Global Cooling Scientific Consensus" (often referred to as "PCF08"). This paper purported to summarize the peer-reviewed global temperature research of the 1970s, and stated that the consensus, even then, was overwhelmingly in favor of global warming, and that the global cooling scare of the 1970s had been manufactured by the popular media. Anti-fossil-fuel propagandists have relied heavily on this paper to dismiss the global cooling consensus of the 1970s ever since it was published.

However, a more complete (and honest) analysis of peer-reviewed global temperature research from the late 1960s through the 1970s by Angus Mcfarlane
(https://www.researchgate.net/publication/347966094_The_1970s_Global_Cooling_Consensus_was_not_a_Myth) in 2018 reveals a very different picture. Mcfarlane shows that PCF08 was based on cherry picking the journals and tuning the search terms to exclude papers that reported global cooling. His far more comprehensive literature review confirms that up to the mid-1970s there was overwhelming (~85%) scientific consensus that the world had been cooling for decades, and that if this trend continued, there was a danger of catastrophic cooling. Only towards the late 1970s did the consensus begin to shift towards global warming and anti-fossil-fuel hysteria.

 

Yup. The rewriters of history tweaked their search terms until they could create the answer they wanted. The presence of Connolley among the authors is a marker for dishonesty.

 

This makes a nice matched set with 2021's COP 26.

Back in the days when data manipulation was still strictly forbidden, scientists reported the globe cooled significantly for decades even as CO₂ concentrations increased.
The global cooling amplitude was -0.5°C from 1960-1965, and 1976 was reported to be the coldest year of any year measured since 1958 (Angell and Korshover, 1978).

The Northern Hemisphere cooling trend reached an amplitude of -0.6°C from 1958 to 1963 according to 150,000 to 200,000 measurements per month for 92% of the atmosphere (Starr and Oort, 1973).

Today these recorded 1960-1965 and 1958-1963 cooling trends have been fully erased and replaced with a slight warming or pause.

The wholesale retroactive falsification of temperature data to conform to the already-falsified CO2-controls-temperature dogma is one of the most disgraceful frauds in the history of science, and now constitutes the greatest single barrier to progress in climatology.

 

Earth's climate has been changing since eons before humans walked the land. Smart people adapt while scare mongers want to force their climate change religion on us. I choose to resist them.

I suspect it's more motivated reasoning than conscious falsification.

 

To the modest extent that we are, it is an improvement.

True, we have lots of problems, challenges and threats to deal with. Fossil fuel use just isn't one of them. Indeed, anti-fossil-fuel hysteria has become a significant barrier to real solutions to real problems.

 

It's very hard for people to tell when their reasoning has crossed the line and become rationalization.

It is interesting that William Connolly didn't get any support in the thread despite that he was exposed as a massive liar for making the claim, "The Myth of the 1970s Global Cooling Scientific Consensus" published in 2008 which is hilarious since they seemed to have missed this long list of Global Cooling papers which are listed here in the LINK
