Democracy can not function when the President lies

Joe Biden was excluded from the 1988 election after he was found to have lied about his college record, and made numerous other false claims and committed plagarism.

Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr., his Democratic presidential campaign battered by charges of plagiarism in his campaign speeches and in a law school paper, admitted yesterday that some of his boasts about his college academic achievements were untrue, including the claim that he had finished in the top half of his class in law school.

In a videotaped exchange at a campaign coffee gathering in Claremont, N.H., last April 3, Biden also claimed that he had attended law school at Syracuse University on a full academic scholarship, that he had been named the outstanding student in the political science department as an undergraduate at the University of Delaware, and that he had graduated from Delaware with three undergraduate degrees.

In a statement yesterday responding to a story in the current issue of Newsweek magazine, Biden admitted that these claims were "inaccurate."

It is fairly clear the political system now still can not cope with a lying president.

A few examples from recent history

2003 many of the military in Iraq thought Saddam Hussein was behind 911, many of the public thought Aluminum tubes could be used in the enrichment of uranium, Etc.

So we got lied to, what did we do about it? Nothing.

 

We think we can spot a lie, and are not gullible.

Humans are wired to believe what those around us believe, it is a tribal mentality.

If everyone in the tribe believes the same thing, we are more likely to succeed in a battle, no matter whether the claim is true or false.

 

Too bad they never caught him stealing all that classified info he's been selling.

 

Looking back, there are the lies that got us into the Vietnam War, the lies that got us into Afghanistan, the lies... Iraq, the lies... Libya, the lies ... Syria,

but the lies that got us into Ukraine are only 1 year old and a lot of the public still believes them.

Or thinks they are 'good lies' as after all we will end up with Russia's oil and gas, so it will turn out fine.

 

Democracy functions everytime we vote and the electoral process plays itself out.

 

What does lying do to stop people from voting? The way I see it you just vote for the liar you dislike the least that's the way democracy functions

That being said I think Biden's incompetence alone should disqualify him.

Aluminum tubes are used in the enrichment of uranium. The issue is whether those were being used for that purpose and that has not been determined.

 

It is simple for me. I assume everything federal government says is a lie. I can change my mind with private sector confirmation. But in the meantime, it is just a lie.

 

Because we get to choose between the lesser of two evils. Or in the case of that election the lesser of two buffoons. Two political parties and the best they could do was a Neocon and a man whose picture appears next to the word supercilious in the dictionary.

On the over all topic, politicians lie. Our system sucks. I don’t see that changing any time soon.

True. Joe Biden had the Ukraine portfolio in 2013 & 2014 when Victoria Nuland as assistant secretary of state authorized the CIA coup that removed the government of Victor Yanukovych, so they were all in on it and Obama as well.

And in 2021 pretty soon after Biden became president he got congress to authorize a large tranche of weapons for our Kyiv government so they could use those weapons on eastern Ukraine, mainly on Donetsk.

As president if you have the backing of the weapons makers, the oil companies, and some other big business interests, you don't need anything else.

 

It's pretty well-documented that Trump lied the most. Though I guess it may not seem that way to right-wingers when they attribute it to "truthful hyperbole."

Democracy can not function when the President lies
It is government that can't function when the president lies, not democracy. If what you say is true then democracy had never functioned since presidents have been lying since time immemorial.

 

It is a good thing Joe learned from his mistakes and has handlers who write all his speeches for him nowadays and tells him what to say and how.

 

Most high profile public figures do the same.

 

To me, it seems Biden has lied just as often if not more than Trump. It seems every single speech, he lies about something that didn't happen the way he says it. I wonder if there is a lie tracker that we can compare these horrid presidents as Biden and Trump are the two worst presidents we have ever had back to back!

 

If our democracy can survive Trump, it can survive anything.

 

To be fair, any back to back including Trump would probably be the worst of whatever you’re measuring.

 

If that was the case, every presidential candidate since 1789 would have been excluded, no matter who the person was or the political party. Would you agree with that?

It isn't about the number of lies so much as their significance.

Even just a hundred lies to get 100,000 people killed is a lot of lies.
