Democrats Lost Because They Got Too Extreme

'NY Times today. Democrats lost this election at least partly because the party has moved too far left on social issues for most voters. To make this point, he quotes an analysis in the Financial Times.'

Dems lost because of their extremism, not because the are the virtuous victims of bigotry and racism.

'Democrats lost ground with moderates, while holding steady among progressives. Charges that racism propelled voters to Donald Trump are at odds with the rightward swing among Black and Hispanic voters, and with a raft of data showing that racial prejudice is in steady decline among Americans of all political stripes.'

    Americans are coming together.

'Democrats are taking a sharp turn leftward on social issues over the past decade. This has distanced them from the median voter, just as Wright’s cartoon depicted. We see this not only in Democratic voters’ self-reported ideology, but in their views on issues including immigration and whether or not minorities need extra help to succeed in society. Notably, the shift began in 2016. This suggests that Trump’s election radicalised the left, not the right.'

So far it seems that too many Dems are 'more concerned with special interests than the public interest.

    Please discuss.

I’ll go with history as to why Harris lost. There’s been 8 election where the sitting president had a overall job approval of below 50%. In each and every one of those elections the sitting president lost his reelection bid or the sitting presidents replacement lost the election. Elections where a sitting president had an overall job approval of below 50%, 1952 when Truman’s replacement Stevenson lost to Eisenhower, 1968 when LBJ’s replacement Humphrey lost to Nixon, 1976 when Ford lost his reelection to Carter, 1980 when Carter lost his reelection bid to Reason, 1992 when G.H.W. Bush lost his reelection to Bill Clinton, 2008 when G.W. Bush’s replacement McCain lost to Obama, 2020 when Trump lost his reelection bid and 2024 when Biden’s replacement, Harris lost to Trump.

Now being too extreme may play into that below 50% approval rating of Biden’s. So to the economy, inflation, rising prices, immigration, crime, ets. Name the issue, reason, but sooner or later they’ll all come back around to job approval.

I agree. The left epitomizes the concept of the path to hell is paved with good intentions.

They are so focused on helping poor people that they would, and have, created systems to help them. However, they do so to an extent that is flippant and careless and extremely abusable. This hurts everyone.

They want to help black people since they are clearly behind so they show them such special attention in policy and culturally. The issue is in their attempt to help blacks they would victimize white people both in policy and cultural perspective. For instance, companies vow to discriminate against whites to overhire blacks, and whites are told only they can be racist...as a couple examples.

They want to tax the rich to the point they arent rich anymore in an attempt to help poor people without realizing once rich people are gone poor people are actually hurt by this to.

The list goes on and on.

Remember when everyone said 81 million people voted against Trump because of how unpopular he was?

Four years later he wins the popular vote with fewer votes than his 2020 opponent got. Hmmm.

and still won again, not changing a thing or going even more extreme to the right.

lets hope republicans don't make the same mistake. There is plenty of history for them to learn from, even the recent history discussed in the OP

--The democrats moved to the far left and the voters rejected that position -- that's clear as glass. But even now the democrats are just attacking Trump rather than listen to the voters. The democrats need to listen to Pres Clinton. He had to learn the hard way -- twice. When gov of Arkansas he went left and lost his bid for re-election. So, he moved to center and won the governorship back after being out of office for 4 years.
--When president Clinton moved to the left again and 2 years into his term he lost both Houses. Something that hadn't happened in 40 years. So, Clinton said, "I got your message". He then moved to center and won re-election. He managed well over his 8-year term.
--But the democrats keep naming scapegoats daily and refusing to admit it's their policies that lost for them. The party has been hijacked by the far left radicals. The country is not ready for open borders and boys in girls' bathrooms. You liberals/democrats on the PF know I'm right.

the entire goal of braying jackasses such as AOC and Lieyawatha is to totally destroy the traditional social norms and rights in this country so they can create a leftist authoritarian society
can anyone explain why the "right" of a mentally ill man to compete in girls sports is more important than the rights of the hundred of girls deleteriously impacted by catering to one gender confused individual? same with DEI selections same idea

    Fake News.

It means the majority of the electorate saw through the Left's propaganda.

Even the Neocon Princess and her Star Chamber Committee couldn't drag her across the finish line.

Kackles tried the Election Year Conversion and it didn't sell

'a mere five years ago ago, Harris adopted—or at least sympathized with—a host of objectively radical and unpopular positions, including decriminalizing border crossings, defunding the police, abolishing ICE, banning fracking, confiscating guns, allowing convicted felons to vote from prison, and requiring all new car sales by 2040 to be electric (to name just a few). As the party’s 2024 nominee, she was reluctant to disavow these past positions or fully account for her reversals on them, saying only, “My values haven’t changed.”'

We all knew what she meant by "my values haven't changed". That meant "I'm just lying in a failing attempt to get elected."

I agree 100%. It was a wink and a nod to the wacky left telling them she is the same person with the same positions.

    They got it,
    and
    We got it.

They spent years claiming that the only thing that matters is the popular vote, then they lost the popular vote!

It's definitely a major part of their loss, though Harris herself cannot be discounted. She's someone not even the Democrats wanted in 2020. It wasn't that hard to figure out that maybe, just maybe, the entire country wouldn't want her in 2024.

But yes, extremism either directly from the party or condoned by it through lack of clapback is a major part of why they lost. To Democrats, transgender stuff is super extremely important. But they forgot that it's only important to them, and NOT to the entire country. In fact, just about all of the Democrats dumbassery can be traced to vocal online minorities(minority of opinion, not race) who the Democrats think represent the whole country. They live in their own world, along with those online cretins.

To be fair, MAGA lives in their own world too, it's just that all the fake nonsense they believe, such as Trump being a patriot, is more appealing across the board than letting Frank and Butch use the woman's bathroom or play on the girl's sports team is. This was an election of competing narratives, and the Democrats let Trump's fake narratives sound more real than theirs.

It was an unforced error and the Democrats absolutely deserved to lose. That being the case though does not mean Trump deserved to win. In a better world, we would have thrown both of those morons, both Trump and Harris, to the curb.

The Democrats went woke and got broke.

    They want to ban guns.

    They want to normalize perversion.

They way overestimated national support for abortion.

    They want an open border.

They lump all hispanics into the same group.

They lump blacks into the same lump as all the hispanics.

They chose the alphabet people over ever other special class. Regular citizens don't want to go along with that crap.

If they use the same strategy in the future, they'll keep losing.

OP, I think you have it backwards.

Democrats most because Kamala played it too safe, failed to distinguish herself from Biden and failed to push a left wing narrative like somebody like Bernie would have.

She refused to have a Palestinian speak at the DNC, paraded around with Cheney, and had no message to inspire people to vote for her. She coasted on not being Trump and that failed dramatically.

Trump sold a narrative. She failed to. A bad narrative beats no narrative at all.

We also lost because a lot of Americans believe Trump's lies.

    They will learn quickly.

Dems will retake House in 2026.

The GOP is, by every conceivable measure, the one that has shifted more to the extremes. It isn't even remotely close. But, we get it You guys hate trans people. The real deciding factor was inflation. That's about it. And the hate mongering extremism that the GOP did to bait people into feeding transphobia.
