It actually could be a phase. I gave the phase thing the benefit of the doubt. Though I turned out to be gay, I don't regret taking the time to really make sure I was truly gay. I actually even had a bisexual phase. It passed.

Children should be encouraged to be themselves but perhaps changing in the girls locker room is inappropriate concerning modern culture.

With all due respect, I don't see why its inappropriate, if anything the transgendered kid would be more likely to be bullied if left in the boys locker room.

Well having grown up lgbt myself, I understand how important it is for lgbt youth to be able to deal with this sort of thing. It's hard and the youngster has a battle ahead of him/her. It's better to learn these things in the crucible of childhood.

It's inappropriate because we base sex on anatomy, not gender identity. The kid is anatomically male. Locker room facilities are segregated by sex. I am sorry, it is hard, though children don't seem to be as polarized about it now. I have a gay teenager. The other boys and girls seem to be perfectly okay with it.

But I taught him how to handle bullies. If he was trans I would respect that, but I would want him to wait before doing any hormone therapy or reassignment surgery. I have a friend that thought he was trans and decided not to be.

So will the nerds, goths, and many other groups. Should they be separated as well? No matter what sex he feels he is, a boy he remains. Should he get to play on the girls basketball or volleyball teams?

Yes he should be allowed to. Look, I don't even agree with everything that comes along with being transgender, I don't like surgeries (body mutilations), but it would be discriminatory for any liberals or progressives to protest while supporting all the other stuff. Catch my drift?

See I think we should base sex on gender identification if society respects sexual orientation. I think anything less is a double standard IMHO.

Are libs allowed to change their mind?

Could confused people be girls one day and decide to be boys the next?

Sex is based on anatomy. I am sorry. I don't think that will change.

I'm pretty much libertarian on social issues, definitely not a liberal though. I'm independent with strong libertarian leanings when it comes to sex, the war on drugs, freedom of speech, etc. I'm not exactly libertarian on foreign policy though, I disagree with pretty much everything ron paul and his kind say about foreign issues. But on domestic issues, he is spot on.

Off topic, but for instance, I think the drinking age should be lowered, smoking age lowered, age of consent should be respected, etc. But I believe in strong national defense, and support for our allies, just not nation building and occupations of middle eastern islamic countries.

Each issue should be looked at for its own merit. Being a liberal or progressive should not mean you tow the line even when you disagree. I am libertarian by philosophy but not a member of any party or other sub-groups. The fact of him having a penis and testicles with no vajayjay mean he is a biological male. Being under the age of consent means he is not able to make the changes nessary for a legal change to female.

He has the same rights not to be beat up as any other child. Making him the center of attention seems like it would create more negative reaction not less.

It sounds like you are saying if you support SSM and not letting little Tommy be Tammy your a hypocrite. I do not believe that to be accrurate if that is what you are saying.

LOL, who didn't think this wouldn't happen?

When California decided to allow children to "determine" their gender and would be allowed access to facilities based on the kids self-determination, this very forum was full of people saying some resourceful boy was going to claim he was a girl and sit in the girls locker room.

Kudos to the boy! I'll bet he is the envy of all his pals.

And to the progs, suck it up and shut up. You made the rules, now live with them. If its your daughter who has to deal with a "transgender" boy, tough sh1t.

And remember alinsky's Rules for Radicals:
RULE 4: “Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules.”
RULE 6: “A good tactic is one your people enjoy.” (this certainly was met!)

But gender identification is hard to determine from the outside, which makes it a rather soft standard and easy to abuse by teenage boys.
Especially with a teenager, where you have the high probability that it's not yet fully developed, as Polydectes noted.

I'm all for accepting teenagers' wishes to identify as whatever gender they want, but when it comes to locker rooms or rest rooms, there is already a standard and it's called biological sex. Making such exceptions for maybe less than a tenth of a percent of the general population (my guess, I don't have any accurate number) just doesn't seem reasonable to me and gets everyone involved in hot water.

So you want Corporal Klinger to become the new normal for society.

Male one day and female the next.

    Thats pretty insane.

What do you mean by allowed? The complication exists. There is a student in the school who is transgender. To only way to completely avoid it is to ban transgender students from schools.

It’s a complication that, like all other complications, the school authorities need to address. There is a valid question as to whether they addressed it in the best way in this case (there isn’t – probably couldn’t and shouldn’t be - enough detail in the article to assess that) but the idea that there is some simple solution that can magically resolve any similar situation in any school remains naive (or dishonest).

No, another way, is to diagnose the mental disease instead of embracing it, and get the student the help he needs.

no matter how much i feel like I'm a blonde trapped in a red-head's body.... genetics dictates, I'm a red head.
no matter how much this little boy has been reenforced by his progressive parents that he's a girl... that penis he has, dictates he's a boy.

he just knee jerk calls everybody that doesn't agree with him 100% a liberal. I am apparently a liberal. Even though I voted for Bob dole, George Bush, George Bush again, McCain, and then Romney. Go figure.

Yup, it's not the schools problem, it's the problem of a Psychiatric professional. The school should let HIM and the parents know HE is welcome back once HE feels better.

HIS education should continue, while HE is getting the help HE needs. Schools don't send bi-polar students home until they feel better.

The needs of the many are being violated for the needs of the few (one in this case)

Even if prevailing medical opinion is that it is not a disease? How to address the condition is a valid question but simply making up what it is for our own convenience, especially with the implied consequences imposed on the individuals involved, is indefensible. You could say the same thing about belief in God but I'm sure you wouldn't (nor would I before you drag anything in that direction).

That's a presumption with zero basis in reality, an irrelevant and offensive attack against the parents who you know absolutely nothing about. Again, you're making stuff up because it's convenient to your predetermined conclusions. Reality does not support your attempts to simplify this.

Maybe they should start. Online classes happen all over the place, and are the best fit for those who cannot integrate well IMO.

It sure would. Maybe it's the best fit for some of these cases. Rather than feeling ostracized from everyone else...which HE will...at least HE can learn in a comfortable environment.

We're talking such a small percentage of people here, that It seems an uneccessary burdon, and distraction on the school and it's faculty. They're stretched thin as it is.

yup, give the parents the textbooks, access to technology and let them home school. If letting him use a special bathroom and shower is important then use the one at home

wait a minute!!!!! Are you saying that you have taken your basic skills, sprinkled in some on-line knowledge and capability and have increased your marketability vs only being valuable in one town on just one topic? Who wudda thunk to do that.................
