Conventional wisdom is that almost no one actually votes against their economic interests. That ultimately, almost everyone in America votes for the person or persons they believe that they, their family, and closest friends will benefit the most from overall.

My own parents were very much "values" voters and insisted on a moral dimension to virtually everything in their lives. But even they from what I've observed voted for their economic interests.

    I don't.

My votes on the national stage have virtually always been values and foreign policy based.

How about the rest of you.

I shouldn't have to vote for or against my economic interests... the government should have NO role in the economy.

Ideally yes but that isn't the way it is for now and the forseeable future.

Yes. I vote against what could be better for my economic situation. In my position is probable that would be more favourable vote a right party and defend the system, instead of fighting the system and wanting a more just system, that is what I do.

So, yes, in principle I act against my economic interests. And I am happy of that. I want justice.

If it's not the government, it will be some other power structure.

The only real difference is that government is one of the few power structures where you have a vote.

    With a monopoly, you don't.

I don't vote for someone because they promise to offer the group of people they classify me into economic privilege, but I do 100% of the time vote for someone that I believe will allow me to compete neither with nor against a handicap.

Justice is one of those words that are most often used to beat the righteous over the head. I often get frustrated when someone mistakenly call something what it isn't, and Justice is something that almost no one gets right.

I've vote D and I've voted R and had to vote for the lesser of 2 evils most of the time. So, yes, I feel I always vote against economic interests.

I have gone 3rd party, that would probably be in my economic interests.

Voting on values is a total waste of time and energy. No one has the same set of values.

Yes, occasionally on local issues. I will sometimes vote for something if I believe it is a benefit to the community even if it is a small cost to me and I am unlikely to use the service.

On the national level I would have a hard choice if the two were to conflict. This hasn't occured recently. Both my perceived economic and social beliefs have pointed to the same party for a long time (Democrat).
