Elon Musk, farmers torch Ireland government proposal to slaughter 200K cows to meet EU climate change goals
Irish Department of Agriculture reportedly considering cull of 65K cows per year for the next 3 years

I guess the next logical step is to start culling people.
After all, those cows exist to feed humans, so it is not the cows fault. All they have done wrong is exist, create milk and meat, and fart.
I believe we are reaching another peak of social insanity. This time it is of the environmental variety, and like most peaks they are a big target. Thanks to the extremes environmentalists are willing to demand we go to, the whole rickety subsidy game is going to come tumbling down.

The cows were going to be dead anyway. What a silly angle to take.

I don't think you understand this subject well enough. They are culling the cow herd not killing fat cattle. Cows are the females that make calfs. From your statement I think you are thinking of steers (castrated males) and heifers (females who have never had a calf generally are not going to join the herd and will be feed out as a fat for slaughter).

I still don't get how this is worse for the cows?

Instead of being incubators for steaks, they are going to be turned into steaks.

The tone of the OP made it seem like this is some sort of atrocity being committed against the cows involved.

One wonders how slaughtering cows affects global climate in any meaningful way. I don't really wonder. I know. It has no effect at all. It is political pandering at the expense of some cattle.

Farmers are being forced to raise less cattle. This will affect the profit that they make in a year. Unless the slaughter of these cattle reduce the number of cattle so drastically that it will increase the cost of beef at stores. While this will keep the farmer close to whole financially, the average consumer will be pay more.

yea probably. If the UK government isn't going to compensate the farmers, they should raise that with their members of parliament.

It isn't any of my business.
