    Elon Musk wants to establish an independent nation on Mars. Does he have a legal and a moral right to do so? Is it possible things will escalate into an interplanetary independence war? Who would win in such a war?

    Even if they exist they seem to be too shy to be a problem. But if there was any economic activity on Mars and Musk would refuse to pay taxes to the US government then who knows what would have happened?

    Really? I do believe Australia has several very unique ways of dealing with colonization problems that may be useful, although they may be a little over the top for microbes and such!

    Either declaring an independent state on Mars or having a national government claim territory is currently illegal under the Space Treaty, but that's simply because right now no nation or entity really has the ability to do that. More likely than Musk's Mars Colony, it's likely the treaty will break down when China builds permanent facilities on the moon, and either declares the entire moon Chinese territory, or more likely, the geographic area around their base.

    To build a colony on Mars or Moon Chinese would need fully and rapidly reusable rockets which they don't have and Musk is going to have in the near future.

    Take the time to review Australian history on colonization.. Pretty sure that's the crux of this topic, colonization right? Or are you pushing a Mars invasion scenario ;)

    But what if a Martian colony produces something they could sell back on Earth? I bet you Warren Buffet would demand from Martian entrepreneurs to pay their fair share to the US Government!

    I'm fully confident that China will steal the technology from Musk. Right now, China is the only national government that has big plans in space, so they are Musk's competition more than the US or Russia is.

    I think NASA's priority right now is whether to refer to black holes as either "Black holes," "African-American holes," "people of color holes," or use Biden twist on it and go with "Blafrican-American holes."
