Emerging Crisis: No one in the agricultural industry can get soil.

Do you know what I've heard? No one in the agricultural industry can get soil. People can't grow plants in a greenhouse without soil which is what's happening. And people who want soil need to put their order in now for delivery next year.

A quick tip from the industry insiders months before it catches up to you.

I've also heard that peat bogs in Canada have been closed, and that's where peatmoss comes from, in other words, garden soil. And environmentalists want to stop the gathering of peat from the bogs completely. This is bad, very bad!

I hope someone of importance and ability to do something will look at this and solve this coming crisis. Otherwise no food, no gardens, no flowers.

All the bans in the UK are done for environmental reasons and the Canadian bogs are being protected and harvested responsibly. There are countless species that live in and around bogs - so environmentalists are ensuring their survival. There are, however, green alternatives.

The anti peat thing is more a UK controversy these days. The soil shortage has been going on a couple years because so many people started gardening through covid. As for bulk purchases, IDK. My local sam's club is loaded down with bagged soil for sale.

Growers need peat moss bales by the pallet and can't obtain them.

    time for Hydroponic greenhouses

    "Hydroponic greenhouses"

    https://www.dutchgreenhouses.com/en/technology/hydroponics/

"The hydroponic system is based on the growing system by which water is provided to the plant while the plant does not grow in the full soil. The substrate or soilless culture is the most common in the greenhouse industry."

A lot of things can be used as a growing medium. Old sawdust, pine bark etc. There are alternatives to peat moss.

    An update.

Most of the peat moss comes from Canada. The Canadian government owns the peat bogs where peat moss comes from.

The word is that the Chinese companies have bought up leases, but rather than produce peat moss, they are just sitting on the land with the knowledge that the demand for peat will drive up the cost of food.

This is what those in the agricultural business are talking about behind the scenes as they are having difficulty getting soil. You've heard it here first, so don't be surprised when this blows up in our faces along with all of the other bad things that are destroying our economy.

I guess people will have to figure out how to compost their own soil again, like they did in the old days.

In China and Japan they used to use "human night soil".

I get all my good soil from goat hay. I get hay for the goats during the winter and come spring I have black soil. The goats waste as much as they eat.....and their waste is my mulch and potting soil.

I would so love to be incorrect about this.........

but it seems to me that whoever it is who can pass a script to Bideon or Trudeau and ask them to read that script........

    wanted a supply chain crisis.........

    and they got it........
