I am so sick and tired of hearing on PF that Affirmative Action creates no quotas and accounts for no discrimination. I'm also sick of hearing white women are the biggest beneficiaries of AA, because that is just simply not true. I was researching for another thread and came across some information that makes me sick.

This data is absolutely unreal. I don't understand how some of you are "ok" with this blatant discrimination taking place.

As a white person who has a GPA of 3.7 and MCAT score of 31, I have a 10.8% less chance of being admitted to medical school than a black person who has a 3.5 GPA and MCAT score of 28.

A white with a GPA of 3.5 and MCAT score of 28, is accepted 35.9% of the time. A black with those same scores is accepted 84.8% of the time. An Asian with those same scored is only accepted 29.3% of the time. That means a black applicant is 3 almost 3 times more likely to be accepted with a GPA of 3.5 and a MCAT score of 28.

Oh, but wait, it gets better. A white with a 3.3 GPA and MCAT score of 25 is accepted 12.3% of the time, a black with the same scores is accepted 66.4% of the time. That means the black applicant is almost 6.5 times as likely to be accepted than a white with those scores. Over 9 times as likely to be accepted than an Asian, 9 times!

Affirmative Action needs to be ended now. There is no refuting this table. It shows AA does in fact discriminate based on race. It shows that under-qualified people are being accepted just based on skin color.

Who do you want as your doctor in 20 years? The under-qualified doctor who was accepted due to AA or the qualified doctor who was discriminated against?

Typical leftist response. Where are the lefties to defend this and claim that race isn't a determining factor?

Because it takes away from the argument they've used for decades. Much like unions, victimization, etc.....without that, the liberal fades away into oblivion.....

In other words, as long as there are idiots out there that believe the idiotic messages of the left, they are still in business. And, they'll keep playing it because they know that without victimization, race, etc...they have nothing.

How is someone under qualified if they have the same scores?? Look, I agree with you, just don't distort the facts to make it seem like a bum can walk in and get accepted to Med school just because they are black.

I can see where some people would be concerned that AA is unfair (in certain respects)... but I REMEMBER the reasons it was enacted in the first place. We need to make it better/right... not eliminate it altogether.

Some would like to think that fairness or justice don't matter... well, Affirmative Action (its very existence) is a reminder that is untrue.

Someday, when Affirmative Action is no more... I hope society truly matches the lack of a need for it. Otherwise, if unfairness and injustice raises its ugly head high enough, AA by some other name will likely come into being.

Get rid of AA? (Sure, but let's make sure we really don't NEED it, before we do.)

Well I wouldn't be against a new type of policy, IMO AA has shown to do the reverse of it's intent.

    You misquoted me.

I was comparing the same scores to acceptance rates in that paragraph.

But the point I was making was that that is hardly "unqualified" as you put it.

Wow, I breathed a sigh of relief or does that mean with Obamacare you can be a doctor without going to medical school?

When I was working at a police department I was never told by the Feds we had a quota. I was told we had to hire more. How many more? Just more?

My favorite was a document that said we should hire more blacks and hire only college graduates.

Not only that but then they want to take away our choice of healthcare so we have to deal with this (*)(*)(*)(*) directly. Not only are subpar doctors going to be the norm, but we are going to be forced by our government to go to them so that we can all feel equal.

In the great debate of health vs. political correctness, political correctness must always come first. Because that's what a tolerant nation does.

This is not only crazy, it's crazy making. Half this country has literally taken such tremendous leave of their senses that the laws they are implementing are full on retarded. They don't even care what kind of negative impact they have as long as they can feel good about doing something tolerant.

These people are ridiculous. Hippies are bad for America.

AA came along when we (as a nation) were experiencing the the social-equivalent of the Great Recession. And just as the economic choices made in a time of crisis aren't necessarily the greatest, so it goes with policies embraced during a time of intense social crisis.

Now, people can say all they wish that African Americans aren't due reparations, but it is clear that many people's sense of real justice did call out for SOMETHING to try and make things right. Affirmative Action, is just one of the things which is part of the pay-back. I'm not shocked that it has had what some perceive to be dire effects over time. But I do think it was necessary (and still is to some degree).

I would agree that some real or perceived unfairness exists within that policy, but I can only remind people of the fact that what led to it in the first place, must be realized, understood and acknowledged... in order to grasp a proper perspective concerning the reality of the same.

Someday, Affirmative Action will (hopefully) be ended, but eliminating it completely today... would likely not be appropriate.

But I'm totalitarian centrist :<. I will gladly go to medical school just for the hell of it if you want to pay the tuition. Then I will complain about Affirmative Action all the time. Maybe.

No, blacks and hispanics need to bring their credentials up to par to compete with caucasians and asians.

Why should whites and asians have to try twice as hard to get into medical school?

    Are you really this shallow?

Because we live in a society that attempts to make people equal instead of treat people equal.

    It is sad.

What is more sad is people trying to dismiss this fact.
