I would say life imprisonment for most of those offences (although the length of the prison sentence for 4 and 5 would depend on the severity of the circumstances). I do not support the death penalty on principle, mainly because there is always the chance of a miscarriage of justice and the wrong person ending up being punished for a crime they did not commit - that's bad enough if they've spend years in prison, but another matter entirely if they have been killed! I also do not support the legalised use of brutal physical punishment - I do not believe that demonstrating that society itself is brutal and violent by law is a good way of persuading the general population that there is a better way to live their lives than using brutal violence! Prisons should certainly be a place of punishment (I certainly don't subscribe to any kind of ideas of making them 'nice' places to be) but dehumanising people entirely is not a good idea, in my opinion, whether it be for less or more than 5 years - unless every prison sentence is a sentence for life, prisoners will eventually be released into society, and having them released as twisted and dehumanised creatures who have been living in an atmosphere where brutal violence is normality will not serve the rest of society well when their release happens. If people are going to be released then there has to be some element of a chance of reasonable rehabilitation into society at the end of their punishment - that is for the good of everyone else more than it is for their good.

Laws in Switzerland aren't as strict as the laws in most states. I have also heard that their strictest law, the one about ammunition registration, is bypassed because most ranges don't enforce the law that you need to fire any ammunition you buy there that day, and range ammunition isn't registered.

However, I have found the findings here: http://theacru.org/acru/harvard_study_gun_control_is_counterproductive/ In a study of European nations and guns, to be very telling.

What no one in EU and MOST definitely the UK, don't understand is, where the very existence of where our great country comes from. Freedom and Liberty from tyranny.

Lets not fool ourselves over here in the states, the 2nd amendment is for the people to have power over THE GOVERNMENT. The ability to immediately defend ourselves, our family and our property was quite a nice secondary corollary, if you will.

The Brits (and the rest of the EU) are used to being ruled, and ruling, other countries. They are used to being told by their government (yeah right, your elected officials) what they can do. You, as society, decided not to have guns? Was there a general election on the gun control issues in your country? Or did your elected official (ie the government btw) vote as your proxy?

You see, in the 1960's, we had a group of people called the Black Panthers, who used to show up when the police made arrests, with LOADED guns to make sure the police did the right thing. This was SO scary for the police, they were able to convince the powers that be to make it illegal to carry loaded weapons. Now THAT was power. You see, the government feared the people and hence they made a law against it. Very sad.

Although, you have chosen to rely your government for your rights, we as a nation have taken that on our own shoulders. It is a very large responsibility. Now the powers that be, have been taking more and more at just about every turn.
