I wonder if some sort of revival could be staged? I highly doubt it, but perhaps some literati will become so disgusted with the way things are going that they decide to give the current system the boot.

My entire premise, it would appear, flew straight over your head.

    Perhaps. Is that it?

I think the Chinese soul and their culture need no "saving" and their contribution to the world is thankfully much worthy; China's sphere of influence seems on the contrary to be growing and I personally welcome it; I bear no nostalgia for the beautiful anarchy in ancient China as I thought was made obvious by my calling you "gweilo" (a term popularized during the First Opium War which is now considered in China as the beginning of modern Chinese history); but do take it lightly as it is coming from another gweilo;)

I'm more Han than you are. You are not a gweilo. You are a gweipo. If you are going to use Cantonese, use it right.

    Gwiepo,

The problem is not your sexual attitudes. It's your syntax.

The blood of the Han courses through the veins of my wife and sons. Since the Americans disgust me, I have come to identify with the Han. You, on the other hand, are way too westernized.

One could say I am a westernized Han in some way. But I am doing great!

    What about you?

A westernized Han is neither fish nor fowl. Neither here nor there. Identity is crucial.

How am I doing? I am the Ninth Immortal. I frighten Satan. :)

I am concerned about your unhealthy disgust for your fellow Americans - that stuff is contagious. Could you not convince the rest of the family to move out?

I've gone full blown East Asian. The Vietnamese have joined the family. You should see how we party when we celebrate Tet and the Lunar New Year together. It's a fusion party.

How did your father come to leave China?

Sounds great - only in America, huh?

My father didn't leave China, he was born in France. But, apparently, his father, who was the grandson of some mandarin, left Vietnam before WW2. I don't know exactly in which circumstances but it probably was in a hurry:)

    Interesting.

Han women are the strongest people on earth. There is quite simply nothing they can't do. Sometimes it's scary. :)

It's not just about loosing the "beautiful anarchy" (which is only one snippet of what I brought up). A lot more was lost as well. Apparently you think the West is in most everything supreme, and that the Chinese were right in disregarding 4000 years of culture in lieu of, well, whatever monstrosity China has become now.

A large sphere of influence is entirely irrelevant to this discussion, and, indeed, does not necessarily indicate a cultured civilization -- you need look no farther than the US to see this exemplified.

Plymouth, there is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- beautiful (in a non-aesthetic way) about Chinese culture.

That may sound arrogant, but that's the truth.

Have you seen the footage of girl that was run over recently?!

    Yes, it is...

Chinese society is nothing to aspire too, it stinks... and there is nothing enlightened about it either.

You can't be serious? The footage went around the world and was shown on every imaginable newsbroadcast. A Chinese toddler was run over twice in the middle of a busy neighberhood. About 18 people (adults of course) ran accross the little toddler and didn't help her or made an attempt too.

This is explained that the Chinese don't give a toss about eachother -- what is important in their barbaric culture is their nuclear family and everyone else can get lost -- even a toddler that is ran over (twice!) and is dying in the middle of the street.

HUGE controversy in China itself, where they blame "Western influence" for this kind of behaviour! How outrageous!

There are, or perhaps were, some things. I do not know if they still exist in China or not.

I am not saying that everything about traditional Chinese culture is superior. But it cannot be denied that it does have merits. The world does not operate in black and white.

I agree with this part, at least. Russell actually detailed the exact same thing, except with a dog. Some hapless mongrel got hit by a car in Beijing and the people stood by and laughed at it.

So, to blame the West for this is ludicrous.

In the Confucian order loyalty extends upward within the Clan structure, and obligation extends downward. The idea of expanding loyalty beyond the Clan is one of the factors that made it so difficult for the Chinese to accept the concept of the nation-state. It was the leading role of the Party that smashed this notion.
