You'll notice today was a peaceful transition, we didn't see anything resembling what we saw on January 6th. For a long time it looked like we would never see a concession from the loser of the 2020 election. Months went by with them insisting that they had won by a landslide, and despite losing every court case to challenge the election (over 60 in total), losing every recount, losing every ballot audit, losing every ballot canvass, and losing every investigation at the state and federal level, they still would not accept defeat, and instead held a rally on January the 6th with the self described intention of stopping the election from being certified.

This kind of conduct from a losing candidate was unprecedented, which ultimately accomplished nothing but a failed insurrection attempt from his followers. The events of January 6th changed things. Initially the losing candidate was planning on holding a counter rally to the January 20th inauguration, but then after the January 6th riots, and talks within the losing candidate's cabinet to invoke the 25th amendment, the losing candidate finally conceded on January 7th

The peace we saw on January the 20th is what we would have seen on January the 6th had the losing candidate conceded sooner. This will forever leave a lasting impression on the now former president's legacy. Normally the outgoing president sees a bump in their public approval between election day and inauguration day. Obama saw a 3 point bump, Bush 43 saw a 9 point bump, Clinton saw a a 9 point bump, and Bush 41 saw a 22 point bump. The losing candidate of the 2020 election however saw a 12 point decrease in their public approval rating.

The 45th president of the United States has sealed their fate as the sorest loser in US presidential election history. Let us hope we never see such conduct from a losing candidate ever again.
