Experience with elephants: Young males need older males to keep them in line

A park in Africa was having problems.

A troop of young male elephants were acting like thugs, attacking and killing rhinos for no good reason.

They figured out the problem, they had no older males among them.

So they brought in some middle-aged male elephants and they straightened things out.

Our conservative community has the same problem.

Where are the middle-aged conservative men to keep the young conservative men in line?

We need to figure this out.

Most young Liberal men are beta males, they are of little problem and very weak in mind and body. It is the stronger impoverished males that lacked father figure guidance that end up in prisons which need the guidance. They could give two rips about politics and likely could not tell you who Joe Biden is.

I have heard from sociologists that males raised by single parents tend to either of two paths. One path is referred to as the effeminate momma's boy path, and the other is the hardened criminal path. I feel somewhere in the middle. I've never committed a crime, but I am on the softer side a bit, having been raised by a single mom.

Elephant killings in Africa 'stabilise' but threat continues
Thu, 28 Jul 2016 - The rapid growth in the illegal killing of African elephants seen since 2006 seems to have stabilised and may be decreasing.

Two new reports indicate that across the continent, the numbers of elephants being killed for ivory has slowed. But the picture is mixed as the slaughter in Central and West Africa shows no sign of moderating. Some experts believe that the decline in deaths could be down to fewer elephants being alive to poach.

Numbers high, trend down

The BBC investigated the war on elephants earlier this year and how it is fuelled by demand for ivory from Asia. Now there is new data on the sources of the illegal killings from the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, better known as Cites. They run two important elephant monitoring records that are seen as reliable indicators of what's happening on the ground. A few months ago, the Mike programme (Monitoring the Illegal Killing of Elephants) showed that number of deaths, which started to grow in 2006, peaked in 2011. Even though the trend is moving in the right direction, there were still over 14,000 elephants killed in the period from 2003-2015.

The BBC also investigated the war on elephants this year and how it is fuelled by demand for ivory from Asia. New data has also been published for the ETIS programme (Elephant Trade Information System). This shows that while trading in illegal ivory reached its highest levels in 2012 and 2013, it had levelled off by 2014. But while there are some positives in the overall picture for Africa, the regional differences are stark. Southern Africa is the area where poaching levels have remained consistently the lowest. It remains the only sub-region that has not seen illegal killings exceed natural deaths since monitoring began. Poaching remains high, however, at the Niassa Reserve in Mozambique and there has been a "troubling spike" in killings at South Africa's Kruger National Park. East Africa has also seen a decline in poaching for the fourth year in a row.

Central and West Africa continue to show the most serious levels of poaching, with illegal killings far exceeding natural deaths. "There are some encouraging signs, including arresting the overall upward trends in poaching, the decline in poaching trends in some sites in East Africa and the overall trends in Southern Africa," said Cites secretary general John Scanlon. "This shows what is possible through a sustained and collective effort with strong political support, but much more remains to be done." However others say that there may not be much comfort in the relative stability that the new figures indicate. "It needs to be understood that poaching levels may be down but in some cases that is due to the fact the populations are severely depleted," said Dr Susan Lieberman from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). "If you look at some of the Central African populations that have lost up to 70% of their elephants you may see poaching stabilise or decrease but that is because the elephants are harder to find."

African elephant population tumbles due to poaching
Monday 26th September, 2016: Africa's elephant population fell around 20 per cent between 2006 and 2015 because of a surge in ivory poaching, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) said in a report on Sunday (Sep 25).

Switzerland-based IUCN is regarded as the most authoritative source on wild fauna populations and the report's release at a U.N. conference on the global wildlife trade will lend a sense of urgency as some countries seek to keep the global ivory trade shut while others want to reopen it. "This is yet another set of data clearly indicating that governments must take all necessary actions to address the crisis," said Susan Lieberman, head of international policy for the Wildlife Conservation Society. The IUCN, which drew on a range of estimates and census data, said it now had a fairly accurate count of 415,000 elephants in Africa in the areas where extensive surveys could be taken, down from over 500,000 in 2006.

There are a number of regions where systematic surveys could not be taken and so it is difficult to say what is happening to elephants in such places. These include South Sudan, Liberia and savannah areas of Central African Republic. Losses in some countries have been staggering. Tanzania, which relies heavily on wildlife tourism, saw a 60 percent decline in its elephant population. "The surge in poaching for ivory that began approximately a decade ago the worst that Africa has experienced since the 1970s and 1980s has been the main driver of the decline," the IUCN said.

Elephant poaching has risen to meet red-hot demand among fast-growing consumer markets in Asian economies such as China's, where ivory is a coveted commodity used in carving and ornamental accessories. The IUCN noted that southern populations in "Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe are stable or increasing, and there is evidence of elephant range expansion in Botswana." But poachers are also training their guns on southern Africa with big declines noted in Mozambique, it said.

Namibia and Zimbabwe have submitted proposals to the UN's Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which is meeting in Johannesburg, seeking permission to lift a global ban on the ivory trade so they can sell stockpiles. This is opposed by other African nations such as Kenya which fear that illicit ivory can be laundered with clean supplies and that it could stimulate demand for a commodity which has one main source - a dead elephant.

I don't think young conservative men are the problem here...maybe you should figure that out first.
