Florida family drives into electric car problem: a replacement battery costs more than vehicle itself

Avery Siwinski is a 17-year-old who's parents spent $11,000 on a used Ford Focus Electric car, which is a 2014 model and had 60,000 miles when it was bought. The teenager had the car for six months before it began giving her issues and the dashboard was flashing symbols.

The car stopped running and they were told the battery needed to be replaced.

The problem? A battery for the electric car costs $14,000.

What a lot of people may not realize is that the battery comprises a big percentage of the cost of an electric car, and these batteries do not last forever.

When the car gets a little older, replacing the battery might often simply not make financial sense.

That entire car is going to be scrapped now. It's pretty much useless. After only 60,000 miles.
Anyone think that is "environmentally friendly"?

I own an electric vehicle and I can say that the battery will likely last us probably around 8 years but as the models get newer the battery becomes more accessible for replacement.

    I love my electric vehicle

I'll stick with my gasoline burning minivan and my two motorcycles thank you very much.

The battery is to crank the starter and to run the lights.

Yes, this unintended consequence of electric vehicle batteries will kill the poor people in specific and the used car market in general. The rich will get to use EV cars in their prime years, and the poor will get a ticking debt bomb they can't afford.

Only the rich will be able to afford cars in the future, the poor will have to find some other mode of transportation.

Wait a minute, are you sure that this wasn't intentional? Force the poor onto public transportation, which isn't developed in America! This sounds like the kind of a dystopian dream the left-wing fringe might like.

I predict the used car market in the future will be smaller than it is now.
This is not going to help poor people, or in the case of this story, young adults looking to buy a first car.

The affluent middle class in places like California and New York won't care because they buy a new car every 8 years anyway.

They definitely work for some people, and that's all fine and dandy. But then you got liberals, in their true liberal fashion, trying their damnedest to force EVERYONE onto electric vehicles. They just don't work for everyone.

The infastructure right now coulnd't handle that shift. It won't for a long time. Battery replacement and recycling needs to get much MUCH better. Charging stations need to be expanded as well as a means to power them. Biden is being unrealistic and stupid.

But if you can get off of an oil car right now, it's like driving for free. Because we get by through trickle charging at night our energy consumption didn't even go up much at all per month.

No oil changes, no muffler/excaust. No radiator. The only maintenance I need to worry about is tire rotation.
