I took a look here to find if there were any anime threads; apparently there was one:
    http://www.politicalforum.com/music-tv-movies-other-media/270691-japanese-anime-gay.html

But the title isn't exactly inspiring -.-

So without further ado, here is my own list of favourite animes:

1- St. Luminous High School: (wiki description follows): When his grandfather dies, Kaihei inherits the post of chairman at an eccentric private girl's school which emphasises the personal freedom of its students. But he arrives to find that one of the students has gone missing. As he investigates Melina's disappearance more students vanish, strange events occur and his position is placed under increasing pressure from teachers and parents.

This is my all time favourite anime. Almost every other anime I like has tons of battles, but not this one. The opening song speaks of a longing that I can't really put into words (can be heard here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laz9-SwbjBY)

2- Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom: Description here

At first, I couldn't get into this anime; the notion that any decent person would kill to survive was too much for me. But I gave it another try.. and it overwhelmed me. I'm a guy, so perhaps this is why the lead female character, Ein, particularly blew me away. At one point in time, you think she's dead and then they start giving hints that maybe she's not and then this music starts up and you find out she's alive.. my god, that moment was pretty emotional for me. There's also moments near the end of the anime that got to me, with this music going.

I'm going to list more that I also found to be quite good. I could describe more of them at some point, but not today :)...

    3- Rah Xephon (Series)

4- Grave of the Fireflies (film) Very sad. Based in part on an semi-autobiographical novel.
Roger Ebert considers it to be one of the most powerful war movies ever made and recently included it on his Great Movies list.[1]

    5- Code Geass

    6- Black Lagoon

    7- Rozen Maiden

    8- Elfed Lied

    9- Ghost in the Shell

10- Wolf Brigrade (film) Pretty sad.

    11- Spirited away (film)

    12- Howl's Flying Castle (film)

    13- Princess Mononoke

    14- Bleach
