“It is not just testing, though. The fear mongers in the East Coast media elite, after weeks of solipsistically assuming their experience in New York was the same as everyone else's, are now trying to frighten the rest of America with misinformation about the coming coronavirus disaster in places like South Dakota.

I don't think they've ever paid so much attention to Red State America in their lives. But now, they can terrify people about the looming disease apocalypse for the meatpacking rubes. They're all in.

But I checked the data on the deadliest coronavirus day in South Dakota. Five people died; five family tragedies. But the number was five. Deaths per 100,000 in South Dakota, four. In New York, it's 138. We put them on a chart, and you can barely even see South Dakota.”

The author in my opinion is exactly right. There are other human costs to the virus that result from too long a shutdown. Drug overdoses, suicide, General hopelessness, lost careers, lost jobs, more domestic abuse, more child abuse. The longer the lockdown the larger the odds of another Great Depression.

The people who opposed the initial protesters and the first states to re open and that never shut down are often resorting to guilt and appeals to fear in their effort to keep us locked down as long as Los Angeles is going to be. The human costs of such an event will be staggering.

Virus be damned. Over 30 million people out of work due to a shutdown. The people ordering the shutdown and the people enforcing the shutdown are all receiving a paycheck. If you live from paycheck to paycheck you can't survive on the $1,200 stimulus which equaled $200 a week. Over 30 million out of work -- the country can't survive if this keeps up. If everyone opens up their business today, many will not be able to open, many people will not find jobs, it will take many years for our country to recover. We can't wait. You think toilet paper shortage is serious, just wait until food has to be rationed, which has started in some areas. Never get in the way of a mother with 3 hungry kids. We must open up and go to work and take normal precautions that we always take in flu season. Sickness and deaths are the price we have always paid.

As would be expected in any national emergency or war or geo-political tragedy, food prices are rising, and people will be self-rationing their food intake (if they haven't started), and do it all without the government telling them to do so.

We began less food consumption in February and are slowly losing weight -- which is great to a point. Mama said hold onto the stash you got.

Suppose they gave a Great Depression and everybody got suckered into it.

Perhaps we should have a coordinated national organization/effort to the fight against the virus.

We need to use social distancing along with precautions and get back to work. We need to fight the virus and fight to preserve the economy.

That would be worse than the virus.

I don't disagree with anything stated above. I was just pointing out that because we lack National guidelines and leave everything to the states we are going to have an inconsistent response and are handicapped in both fighting the virus and opening the economy. Logic needs to prevail.

But we had a despair epidemic prior to COVID-19, all this did was make it worse and more visible. Why do you think we've been seeing a rise in political extremism? It's not because people are happy with their lives, it's because they're trying to change them to make it better for other people.

Many on the right would appear to be under the impression that the shut down is voluntary. That we can "decide" to shut down or not to shut down.

    Is that possible?

After all the many times that this has been explained, I'm probably misunderstanding something.

A better strategy is to get as fat as possible to ride out the expected famine.

Yep, got mine with a .44 cap n ball from about 100ft. It was perfect, I saw them from about 100 yards away on the other side of the river. They went over a slough bank by the river and I crossed the river (low water) and stalked up and poked my head over the bank and there they were. Fired twice and missed, third shot sent a lead ball thru both lungs, ran 15 ft and gave up the ghost. Now I know the gun shoots high, no more missing. Third shot I actually fired at the ground under it's vital area.

All one has to do is look at the data. Knowledge and data is your friend not your enemy as wingnuts would like you to believe.

A ****ed-up response to the public health crisis is extending our economic crisis.

Stephen Moore is a complete wingnut and his opinion frankly isn’t worth considering.

As far as perception of our large state Governors Dewine’s (R-OH) approval sits on top and Kemp’s (R-GA) on the bottom.

We have a coordinated federal private, state, local organized effort to fight against the virus. Now we need an equal effort to to fight against a depression.

It’s ludicrous to try to minimize the role that the President and the federal government played in combating the Wuhan virus China exported to us
