Wow. That came as a bit of a shocker. Will Raul continue to move away from the Communist values of his brother? Or has Cuba seen the best of what's to come? http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/26/world/americas/fidel-castro-dies.html?_r=0
""He reshaped Cuba in his image, for both bad and good," said Pastor, who died in 2014. "Cuba will be a different place because he lived and he died."" What was the good?
You know what they say about people dying in threes. This could be one hell of a threesome depending on the remaining party.
I'm not sure there was much good about him. It seems things didn't begin to ease up until his brother took over. I hope the people of Cuba will be given more and more opportunity to prosper under Raul now that his brother is gone. And am I mistaken, or is Raul open to Democratic elections?
` One thing for certain, the US capitalists are banging down his door with fists full of money and promises of riches.
Fantastic if its true. He isn't another one who said Trump will be president over my dead body is he?
My first thoughts were. "Good.....wait I didn't know he was still alive....." His brother will stay where he is probably and once he is gone, they will become pro-US because by then Trump will be back in business as a Hotelier and be looking to build huge unbelievable resorts in Cuba.
` I have no problem with it. I'm a capitalist. The problem is the excesses, greed and crime that come with it.
` Cuba used to be a US organized crime haven, pre-Castro. Many say, that's what caused the revolution.
Yep, money was king in Batista's Cuba. His people didn't like the fact Americans and other Westerners were treated like royalty while they starved in the streets. I'm only guessing here, but over time, they weren't much happier under the Castro regime.
Good riddance. Now when his brother croaks all of the Cubans can go back to Cuba, including Ted Cruz.
How nice a man died and your all happy, I didn't agree with his politics as an American Communist I think some market forces should not be government held unlike well Cuban Communism. But now I hope his brother moves for more economic freedom and reforms while keeping the Communist control of major sectors and improving those as their economic reforms bring in more tax revenues such as proper health care for all which has been an issue for your average Cuban.
I'm curious as to why you'd want to see a continuum of communist control when it is solely responsible for the current state of Cuba. While Raul has opened up commerce and allowed for some freedoms that citizens have not enjoyed in the past, he still has a long ways to go instill true prosperity for the people of Cuba. For one, he needs to end the dictatorship at some point. Let the people decide who should lead them. Maybe he does amazing things and the people will come to love him, but if he doesn't, they should have the opportunity to go in another direction.
He freed Cuba from the status of American colony. His policies in education and healthcare were vast improvements over the vicious neglect of the poor under Batista. Only abject reactionaries are still whining about Castro. Look at the idiot Cubans in Miami dancing in the street and the right-wingers trying to diminish the impact of one of the world's important historical figures out of puerile spite over being bested by one old man for over 60 years. Typical classless response from those types.
Healthcare? The hospitals routinely had no bandages or aspirin. And what good is a fine education if you inevitably make just $30 per month?
I predict that Obama will carry on as if the Queen of England had just kicked the bucket, Castro being one of Obama's symbolic mentors along with Saul Alinsky and Bill Ayers. Trump on the other hand is probably laughing his ass off.
